Snap on cordless drill 18v series

Looking for a few reviews on snap on cordless drills 18v since I can get a good deal from dealer for about the same price as a new Milwaukee fuel

Just want options since I would like to not have another battery and charger tie up my space since I have the 18v line up and could use a big drill at times too

I have the Snap-on CDR4850. It is a bit heavy but I don't use it all day long so it's no problem. It has (and I need in my work) a lot of torque and good battery life (nicads). The chuck is first rate and holds bits well. I thought about standardizing on Milwaukee because I have some other Milwaukee tools but I like the Snap-on and am concerned I wouldn't be as happy with the Milwaukee.

A guy I work with has both the 14.4V NiCad and 18V NiCad drills and he loves them, I've used them and they were very well balanced. I have Milwaukee M18 Fuel, Bosch 18V, Hilti 18 V, Makita 18V and will agree that the SnapOn are heavier but they are solid, well built units.

i have a co-worker that bought a SO 3/8" dr impact, just over a year later one of his batteries wouldnt hold a charge...
"sorry, it's out of warranty, i can sell you a new one"

that kinda *****, SO batteries aint cheap..

Some of the snap on do offer 2 year warranty, but milwaukee is still over double the warranty period. Also milwaukee has more expandable options for my line of work and is cheaper to obtain multiple batteries. Both are great tools, you just have to weigh your needs.

i went with milwaukee for the warranty, and lower cost.

i abuse the milwaukee stuff i have working on const eq.
3/8" dr fuel impact is over 2 years old, looks like hell, no battery issues, works every time i pull the trigger. 12v LED flashlight has been great, and no problem with the one i had to warranty

just recently added an 18v fuel grinder, 12v fuel 1/2" drill/driver set,

moved the 12v 3/8" drill & driver to the house, to replace some 12v ridgid tools i'm really not happy with...

Good drill, the chuck is one of the best in the business, very easy to tighten with 1 hand.

I thought the new SO batteries came with a charge warranty. The battery can tell how many times it has been charged.

I do know by pressing a few buttons on the battery, it will tell you how many charges it has had. I can not recall where i heard that, and I did not see it on their website.

Cut and past from a April 2015 review of the: Snap-on CT8810A cordless impact wrench.

A unique battery feature is a charge cycle counter. By pressing and holding the button on the battery for 10 seconds, it’ll tell you how many times that particular battery has been charged. Viewing the four LED lights on the battery (lights L1, L2, L3 and L4), the lights will indicate up to a four-digit code. For example, if LT1 flashes one time, and LT2 flashes three times, and LT 3 flashes four times, and LT4 flashes 5 times, this means that this battery has been charged 1,345 times. That’s pretty cool, providing an idea of the battery history, since you don’t need to guess at how many times a battery has been charged.

Snap On has a poor warranty, whether it is only the short time 1 year for the most part compared to 5 years. Plus Snap On you must send in the tool taking 3-4 weeks, longer if the dealer is a flake. Milwaukee has local service centers, I had a bad battery, was tested and replaced in 10 minutes. The service center offers most small repairs while you wait.

I had one of the first Snap On cordless impacts in 3/8" the tabs that held the battery broke off after just about a year. Snap On wouldn't warranty the tabs need to buy a new battery for like a $150.

I'll never buy Snap On cordless or air tools again.

i made the switch from so to milwaukee 18v fuel this year. I am a SO fan boy with all SO tools but the milwaukee line up is much larger , cheaper and just as good if not better . Wish they came in green.

This is just a thought, but I wonder if sometimes companies start to 'slack off' on quality after developing a good reputation and are trying to get by on their PAST reputation! The 'big names' usually get big for good reason, but I could see this happening with them, depending on how they are run.

I was in the same boat as you about a year ago and went with the Milwaukee. After reading stories about poor SO warranty service and hearing about them from techs, I bypassed SO and bought a M18 impact.

I have the CDR8850 drill and I love it. Tons of Tq and as many have said the chuck is very good. I am very happy with it.
