Are they any good?

What are their negatives?

If there was no price difference, how does the quality stack up to the big box standards?

I've used Dewalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi, and Hitachi drills. I'd like a new drill, and the SO feels really nice, and also appears to be made here.

AFAIK, the SO is the ONLY us made battery drill. It says "assembled in usa". It seems weird that SO would be the only one offering a us drill, when I doubt they make them. I know SO makes their own air tools and most of their hand tools, but I have never seen anything to indicate they make their own battery tools. They may, I just don't know. It strikes me as very weird that if they source this from somewhere (like Bosch, for example) how is it assembled in the usa? If it is sourced from us sources, why is it that no one else is selling it? Surely, SO wouldn't have an exclusive with something like this.

I would get the drill if you can get it at a decent price.

My Dad has had a few over the years (9.6v, 14.4v, 18v) they are good drills. The 18v had the charger go out, so he had to get a new one for 80$ (both were china). Thats the only problem I know of.

There are less expensive drills available though.

Not to be picky but I wouldnt it's say "made in the USA" just because it's assembled here.

I would bet just like their welders / plasma cutters etc. They are sourced from another company and then they tripple the price due to the SO name on it . I also agree that just because it says " made in the USA " much like most American Made cars I would bet they are " assembled in the USA " from parts sourced elsewhere . I like my Dewalts never had a problem with them so far .

I have the 14.4 and 18v. Both are good drills. The 18v's chuck and shaft it mounts to pulled out in under a month. Drill was warrantied no questions ask. Snappy said he had a couple, but small number compared what he sold.

Other than price, what do the others have that the SO doesn't. I've been using drills for a long time, and have handled most of the brands, and have beat up my share.

Chuck quality looked top notch.
Balance felt just right.
Trigger felt great.

What about the internals? Is the SO's gear train all metal, or cheesy. Not sure now, but in the past industrial suppliers had the real dewalt/makita/milwaukee, and the big boxes got the cheapend up versions.

The Makita drills in this design say "Made in USA" on the sticker

Ummm. that's urban legend. Model number is model number by law.

I also have the 14.4V and 18V Snapon drills. Both drills are very good and I have no complaints with either one. My 18V is lithium ion and the 14.4V is not. I also like Panasonic cordless drills. I also have a Milwaukee 18V and a 28V drill, both lithium ion. I don't like the Milwaukee drills as much as the Snapon or Panasonic drills.

I have a v28 and curious why you don't like it, I think it is pretty tough, but kinda heavy....

I have Milwaukee V18 and Snap On 18v impact and drill. I use the Snap On drill in the shop only because it shares the batteries with the impact.

the power and function are good, only I don't like the grip. too tacky and it's a dirt grime magnet.

The V28 is pretty bulky and heavy, but I knew that when I got it. I thought it would have more power and last longer on a charge. The 18V Snapon is lighter and better balanced and has about the same power and charge life for me. Don't get me wrong, the V28 is a good drill, but I was expecting something better. Maybe my expectations were too high. I am very happy with the performance of the V28 Sawzall and the metal and wood circular saws as well as the portable vacuum. The drill was just a bit of a disappointment. I picked up all of the Milwaukee V28 tools and batteries for very good prices so I did OK.

I like the vacuum works great. Sounds like you have what I have, the contractor set+the vacuum and also the bought the portable bandsaw and impact wrench and the blow mold cases for all of them. They work great, but I need some new batteries after 6-7 years on them, I think they are not holding a charge as long, but still work fine for home use.

I hope my batteries last 6-7 years. Glad to hear your tools are working good for you.

I really like mine a lot. I have the 18v 1/2" drive version with the Li-ion battery. Lasts forever and lots of power. I bought mine used at a pawn shop.

i like mine but don’t buy it in green, because bare tools are not available in green which really blows.
