If the vacuum probe for your Counsellor doesn't work, let me know. I may be able to help.
Thank You,
Oh and yes the COP adapter kit is for the scope!
:Kodos:

That is interesting! I do not have the gas analyzer so I do not have first hand knowledge of this. I just remember reading that the O2 sensor fails. I would read up on things and fire it up and see what it does :)

If you happen to find the instructions for the COP kit would you send me a copy? I would like to see how this kit was used.
Didn't forget about you Bill, just had a few/3 bad days, didn't even take the
leads out of the car yet. :wtf:.....................:bitchslap

There must be a battery somewhere that is no longer good. If there is no battery compartment cover anywhere on the outside unit, it might be inside somewhere.

Hey Not a problem :)

My MT3000A doesnt keep date and time after shut down and re start, anybody know the fix for this?

The user manual states that there is an internal power supply to keep time/date working when main unit is not powered up. So far I can't find any mention of it in the repair manual.

I have some memory left of when I paid 24K for my counselor 2 setup from Snap-On. I would be in the dark if I was still using it today.

im thinking of buying a local 3000a with a gas analyzer- the seller thinks it needs some "cal gas" as the analyzer doesnt work- the pictures show a yellow container that looks like the size of a r134a 20 lb can.. but yellow.

i dont care about the size or its lack of function with current stuff- its primarily for garage art.. i have a snap on Modus i can use anytime for work -

on the thread here its mentioned to replace the o2 sensor? any idea if thats a easily / cheap local replacement?

i would like to have the gas analyzer working for fun to put on carburetor cars like i used to use one for 30 years ago.. that and the timing light.

If the seller tried to calibrate it with cal gas, but couldn't, then the "gas bench" has issues. Might just need disassembly and cleaning, or the chopper motor could be bad. $$$

If the seller just hasn't calibrated it in a while, who knows.

Yes, cal gas comes in cans that look the same as the large refrigerant cans. Haven't bought any in a while, but you can buy it online.

For the O2 sensor, google "emissions analyzer oxygen sensor". As long as you get the right thread size and output (most are a low voltage signal), you should be good. They come in what looks like a cat food can. Once you open it, it is "on" until it dies. They are chemical reaction based. As soon as they are exposed to oxygen, they put out a voltage signal, usually for about a year. No way around this. They cost around $70. If you choose not to change it, you have a 3-gas analyzer instead of 4. You can get by with 3 for diagnostics.

O2 is unburned oxygen in the exhaust. High and you're lean or have a misfire if HC is high, near zero and you're rich. IIRC 2-3% is normal. All bets are off if the car has an air pump or an exhaust leak.

Opening This Thread again.
Sometimes things don't go like we thought they would.

I have since moved, and The Garage right now is Pretty small.
I can hardly even get in there to find anything, Let alone have it set up as a little shop.
I had intentions of horsing around with this machine, and working on other peoples cars.
Thinking about downsizing, This will probably be one of the items to go.

What a great thread!

I just purchased a nice MT1665 Counselor I with the optional printer. The unit seems to be in good shape, the screen is bright and all the menus come up on the display. It is missing the secondary voltage pickup that clamps around the coil wire to the distributor. The clamp I need is the red one in the attached photo. I have the HEI adapter and I can use that on my old Pontiac.

I'm not up on electronics - can I just get any old inductive clamp and attach it to the counselor? I have looked on ebay and can't find any cables for the MT1665.

Thanks for the help.

Andy

Thanks for the replies.

I am wondering about the timing light clamp as well. I can get the 9-pin AMP connector to connect the clamp to the MT1665 harness.

What I do not know is if all the clamps are equivalent. Some literature calls the clamp "inductive" and some "capacitive". Is there a difference?

The MT1665 Manual calls the coil clamp a "Remote Coil Capacitive Pickup" in the parts list and the clamp for the spark plug wire is an "inductive pickup".

Anyone have some knowledge about inductive vs capacitive?

I'll contact AESwave tomorrow to see if they have a clamp that will do the job.

looks like the one for the coil wire here

https://www.picoauto.com/products/ignition-accessories/secondary-ignition-pickup-capacitive-with-bnc
PP178-Secondary-ignition-pickup.jpg

How to use the MI074 Secondary Ignition Pickup

Safety precautions before use:

  • Keep the lead away from pulleys and other moving parts
  • Keep the lead away from heat
  • Never let the pickup come in direct connection with primary or secondary voltage (otherwise the PicoScope may be damaged)
  • Always use the ground clip
  • Do not let the metal portion of the pickup contact a ground
Connecting the MI074:

  • Connect the MI074 to the automotive oscilloscope before connecting to the vehicle
  • Connect the ground clip to a good ground on the vehicle
  • Connect to vehicle
For...

  • Standard Ignition: clip the pickup around the coil wire (or one plug wire at a time)
  • Integrated coil: clip the pickup around the central location on the distributor cap
  • DIS: clip the pickup around one plug wire at a time

oh, ok found AESwave too, sounds like that might be your ticket.
I see they have 4 different styles.

Was the MT1665 the Snap on scope before the Snap On Counselor 2 Analyzer?

Falcon, I wonder if Snap On would have that pick up and lead NOS sitting around somewhere, Or did you already check with them?
Damn, I finally got to where you can "see" the inside of my garage,
Got the motorcycle in there and everything,
brought some stuff in the kitchen, (good thing I'm single sometimes) I am "So" going to have to fire this scope up one of these days.
Don't know if you read the whole post, but I have a pretty complete set of adapters for mine, DIS, COP, GM's HEI, Nice snap on timing light.
(I'm pretty sure the timing light can hook into the scope, *OR* be used separately.)

Cool Video here, Shows your firing order and everything.
I forgot about the "Even/Odd" feature. He does it on a straight 6,
don't really thing it applies on a straight 6, But it's still cool.
I remember it well, on the V8's. OK, now I remember, (guess not so well.....LOL)
Cylinders 5 & 8 misfiring in your cylinder balance test, usually had a vacuum leak in that intake runner at the back of the motor. IIRC the PCV valve hose came off that runner too, often times it would split.

I have a request - can someone that has the Counselor I capacitive pickup please take a photo of the pin out inside the connector and post the photo here? I am trying to verify the actual pin out connections of a known working capacitance pick-up.

Thanks,

Andy

I spoke with Snap-On today - the pick-up was discontinued in 2013. No stock remains, no leads on any inventory anywhere. I will say the Snap-On customer service folks were very helpful!

I have a Counselor I MT1665 and I'll get a picture of the connector for you. Just give me a bit to get to it.

I am very much in need of the factory repair and parts manuals for my MT 1665.
I would appreciate it very much if you could make those available to me.

one, Two, And three, is a Box of connectors or adapters,
IDK,
Then a Break out Box For older fords, test the ECM. with a volt meter.
last is the 2 machines on the stand.
I have a learning curve ahead.
Thing is, I'd say this thing should be able to read DIS, say like on my 02 Alero, with the coil packs.
My thinking is, if There is adapters to read COP, Didn't DIS, with the coil packs come along BEFORE COP.
I'm hoping at least.
It's on a nice roll around stand, I have to go back for, and it also came with a printer.
And like I said, a 2 Gas exhaust machine. Bunch of new filters.
Don't know if I'd use the 2 gas much.
last one is the 2 machines on the stand.
So this reads battery and charging system too then I think, Right?
Edit, Really hope I have or can get what I need to do DIS,
and hopefully can read My secondary pattern on say like My 02 Alero, V6
and others.
I know this is old but Im looking for one of these scopes or parts call or text me 216 406 5355 tommy THX
