I’m looking to buy some tools off of Facebook and was talking with this guy selling a few hi viz snap on tools. I’m not super familiar with the used market for them so I’m just coming here to see if this is a decent deal or not. After some negotiating, we are at $650. Apologies if this isn’t the correct place to be asking this.

I'd say rough estimate $1000 new retail. If you bought all that at once, in cash, from a dealer, you could likely negotiate at least 10% off, more if you're a regular.

Not the worst deal ever, but far from the best.

Just today I was going through tons of sockets, mind you nothing in sets just tons of singles and trust me they were not cheap, being snap on,mac, and Matco. So, I can see the guy wanting what he is asking. In a funny twist, I was picking up proto, p&c, boney, and SK for around a dollar or two for larger sockets. Quality drives his asking price. It cost me with tax $83.00 dollars for 41 sockets and 6 taps or something like $2.02 per socket which I feel I got my money's worth to help me try and fill some missing spots in my collection.

If I had paid his snap-on price, I would not have that 41 sockets, more like maybe 15 sockets if that. So, you have to ask yourself if you want a lot for your funds, or a nice quality complete sets, either way if you are happy then go for it.

Agreed. That’s Snapon for ya.

OP - i think $500 is closer to a “fair” deal. Maybe high vis commands a higher price? I dunno. Unless you’re really keen on the color, I’d pass.

On an unrelated note , can’t this guy bother to clean his grimy tools before taking photos? A little bit of WD40 and a rag and they’d look almost new again.

If it were me I'd be looking on ebay for similar used items to gauge prices. For that lot have to ask what interests you about it. Is it the color, the fact that its Snap-on or functionality of individual tools. IDK if $650 is a fair price for that lot or not but what most interests me would be the hammers, screwdrivers and adjustable wrenches. Personally yellow wouldn't be that much interest to me. Some of the other tools would be nice to have but I could live without. That being case I bet I could put together a set of tools that I really wanted or needed for maybe $400-$500 (used) rather than buying some tools that I really didn't care about or need. Hope that makes sense. End of the day its your money do what makes you happy. Good luck.

I really don't see any tools there that warrant a SnapOn premium. My snap on pics have broken as often as lesser brands, crescent wrenches and pliers hardly ever get used, Handy Cook hammers are just as good. Some precesion screwdrivers are probably worth a bit, but are those any better than some other premium brand drivers? Wera, PB, Vessel?

You could sell the two foams by themselves for a couple hundred bucks apiece.

Do they? Brand new foam trays sell for ~$50/piece on eBay, and used ones in good condition sell for about half that.

You’d be lucky to get $20 for a used, oil stained tray like those in the OP.

My personal price ceiling for used Snap-On is the cost of equivalent new Icon. While I had to go with Doyle wrenches (though I'm sure Bahco would probably be a better metric--as they are Snap-On owned), my total came to $267, without sales tax (@ around 7% since my HF is in WV). That's less than half these tools.

PS: if I were selling these for $600, I'd have at least cleaned up the grease.

Quick look through the "Sold" listings seems to show between $35-80, not counting the full socket sets (this includes the Hi-viz yellow). All of the ones which sold seem to look brand new.

People can ask whatever price they want, but nobody seems to be getting tons of money, unless they are for very big sets (not picks/screwdrivers).

I'd bet a dollar to a donut this offer is a case of buyer's remorse from a weak moment/ bad decision aboard the tool truck. Only the wrenches appear much used. Failure to clean them up for sale is just another bad decision.

Anyone can list an item for whatever price they want, that doesn’t mean that it sells for that price. You are hopefully aware of that, yes? Aside from that, you picked an unrelated foam wrench tray for some reason.

Here are a few recent listings of the trays—albeit brand new— listed in the OP along with the price they sold for. The very same trays you claimed could be sold for a few hundred apiece.

Your claim that those used, greasy trays could be flipped for several hundred dollars simply doesn’t reflect actual market value. Hope this helps.

Just be careful, Snap-On on Facebook can easily be a scam, and you don't have the buyer protections of eBay. Unless you mean in-person marketplace

Screwdrivers could be $100. Picks and spoons, another 100. Hammer set would be a deal at 100. For the 2 slip joint pliers, cleaned up, they could be $100. Another $100 for adjustable, long picks, organizers. $500 is a fair price IF….IF you like Snap on.

These are NOT, in my mind, the most desirable tools. For $500, you can get way more capability. If you collect yellow snap on, and I guess I do, this might be a good deal. The one unmatched instinct screwdriver would be a problem for me. I personally don’t have all those picks. I good set of radiator hose picks are good to have, but they aren’t included. Personally, this is not a hugely desire group of tools. I collect yellow, and I wouldn’t pay a cent more than $500 for everything.

The hammers are worth a premium over the other options out there - why no one else has copied Snap On's grips is beyond me. However, I still wouldn't pay more than half of retail for any used tools. They are used, I have to spend my time to go get them, need to clean them up, etc.

The long picks in foam are around $75 new.
The 16pc torx and pick / seal removers are $345 in the foam...and personally I would not spend on those Torx drivers as there are a myriad of other equivalent options for much less.

They're all good tools, but the most useful thing that you'd probably go out of your way to buy in that lot is the hammers as noted earlier. Other than that, the other thing to note (eg the screwdrivers) are all mini-tools which aren't worth that much money. The whole thing is worth like $500-550 plus your value for organizers and the color.

Also as mentioned, these aren't really the best tools to be spending money on as a novice, but nothing in that it is useless. The 2pc adjustable set is arguably worth like $160-175-ish, and probably distorts the evaluatiosn of both the price/value and the perceived usability of the tools in this set quite a bit.

That can vary a bit by trade and experience level, but its a major YMMV for most people.

I don't think this is going the way the OP intended.

A quick search turned up these FBMP ads.

I can't find the other ad with the hammers and wrenches. But between these 2 ads, we're at $225.. so that means the other stuff, hammers and wrenches/pliers are at least listed for $425. That would equal $650, but OP says after negotiations that is where they are at.

I find this troubling...as a new member and not being honest. I foresee this member attempting to scam the membership here.
