snap-on drawer slide removal?

I just picked up a pretty ratty lookin Snap-On top box and riser from some guy for $20. It'll be alright after a good scrubbing and some fresh paint.

How does one get these friction slides to come out? I don't see any obvious clips or springs or anything, the only thing I can think to do is drill the rivets out that attach them to the drawers.

The guy I bought it from said it was from around 1952 but I can't find any date codes or anything.

Is there any place to buy new slides for this box? One of them is broken, at first glance.

What's the best paint to use to repaint it?

Thanks!

The top box is a K55 - I have one too.

The drawer slides have a little spring clip that needs to be released. Use a thick feeler guage or a hacksaw blade and slip it between the drawer and the slide. Slide the drawer slightly closed and push "tool" further past the stop and then the slide is loose.

Nice score on the boxes.

Oh wow, WWII era stuff fascinates me - good to know!

I'm still not convinced about painting - I'm going to clean it and see what happens. It was in a body shop so it's got some overspray and spillage on it which I don't think looks too hot but I guess it ads to the provenance. It's been repainted, badly - you can see the different layers of paint where it's worn under the handles.

What do you think the chances are of Snap-on warrantying the busted slide?

Here is what the tool looks like.

Tool in place ready to be inserted.

Fully inserted. Grab drawer and finger on end of tool and pull drawer out.

Use tool at the back of the slide to remove slide.

A look at the spring metal retainer on a slide, that the tool gets it to slip by the stop in the box.

Do one and you'll get the hang of it.
