I'm in need of a new set of drill bits. The cheap set I had is on its way out and I want to get a quality set this time. I've come across the snap on thunderbits. Does anyone know who the OEM for these is? In my searching I've come up with conflicting answers. Anything from Irwin to Norseman. :dunno:

I have a few SnapOn cobalt sets and I believe they are made by Precision Twist Drill.
..very high quality. .and should be, for the money!

You can't go wrong with Cleveland or Latrobe either. Those three are the top brands that I'm familiar with.
If you work with stainless make sure you get the cobalt, otherwise HSS is fine. Coatings are really optional unless you're running production and/or messing with titanium or some other PITA alloy.

ThunderBits are Triumph Twist. Kind of hard to confuse this since its a registered name of Triumph Twist.

I have a few SnapOn cobalt sets and I believe they are made by Precision Twist Drill.

This was true until about 6 years ago. PTD sold off the Triumph Twist division to a distributor (Minnesota Twist Drill). Good news is they weren't a Chinese distributor and the manufacturing has largely remained intact.

Regardless of who make the bits for SO, do they (or anyone else, for that matter) give free warranty replacements?

Last I talked to customer service (within the year) the bits are not warrantied, driver might be a different story. MAC has warrantied burs, taps, and drill bits for me, but that was a few years ago.

I paid like $350+ for my snap on drill bits under the acpumption that I could warrenty them when they broke. my dealer later told me he wouldn't warrenty them because they were a "wear" item. I later bought MAC drill bits because he like me more and will warrenty my bits. so its depends on wheather your driver likes you or not. but ask him before you buy any. but you cant go wrong with norman

Having both Triumph and Norseman drills, I find myself reaching for the Triumph most often. They hold a cutting edge longer, and seem to pull a better chip. Unless your SO guy is crazy enough to warranty a drill bit, I'd look at getting them through MSC or Enco.

Don't waste your money on SO branded drills. There are so many quality brands to choose from for a fraction of the price.
