Snap on dual80 issues?

So I bought a New Snap-On FLF80 (3/8'' Flex head) about a month ago, but today was the first time I was actually able to put it to real good use. I used it pretty hard all day today at work and noticed that I actually had it skip on me a few times...The first time it happened I thought I was just imagining things, but then it happened at least 3 more times. I opened up the ratchet to make sure everything was ok. All the parts and pieces looked perfectly fine, no signs on damage/wear at all. So I put it back together and continued working where it skipped on me at least 1 other time...Has anyone else experienced skipping with any of their dual 80's? I hope this isn't something that is going to be a problem because I recently just upgraded all my ratchets to dual80s...

Never had that happen and I bought mine when they first came out and I have new ones too. Try giving it some light oil.

Use several different ones professionally, daily, NEVER had this happen.

I have had mine skip a few times, though it has been used hard. My dealer is going to rebuild it for me (free). This ratchet is the exception though, my other is fine and coworkers have had zero issues.

Maybe under hard use, I had it skip once or twice. I chalked it up to the amount of torque I was applying (the job probably was best suited for a 1/2 drive). Otherwise, it's pretty much my "go to" ratchet, and gets used everyday.

I've gotten a couple that had issues, one that bound up when in a certain orientation, and another that had trouble grabbing a couple teeth, although it wouldn't usually fully skip.

Overall, though, I don't find them to be any more tempermental than other ratchets. I would say that generally, they function properly when new most of the time.

To be completely honest, I don't think they're that revolutionary when compared to any other high end ratchet, but I like the ergonomics, especially the selector and the handle shape.

i agree, for a ratchet this expensive it should not happen.i hope that if it is more than an anomaly, people with this experience post up here, and call snap on.if it can be attributed to ''normal'' use,one would expect the failure rate for this problem to be higher on less expensive brands with the same specs.after all even hf gives a lifetime warranty,so being able to just swap it out, doesnt cut it,for me anyway

Could be a design flaw. Since it is fine tooth, the tooth is very small so the tooth engagement is small. Any slop in any of the components can cause the tooth to disengage. To minimize the slop, all the components must be precision machined. I assume Snap On did not have the precision machine to machine the critical components so they farm it out; therefore, they did not put "USA" on the dual 80. I assume they must have since acquired the precision machine to do everything in house; therefore, they are putting the "USA" on the dual 80.

I have to go out on a limb here and say that is a horrible theory as to why it wouldn't say USA on it.

Anyway, on my non-usa stamped dual 80, all 4 of them, used every day professionally, I have not had any issues. Just bring it to a dealer and they'll solve the problem.

You should tear it apart and completely clean it - that should take care of the problem.

I had one that came from the factory with a small sliver of steel that kept jamming the gears.

You could pop it apart and lube it or just give it to your dealer and let him fix it. I don't have a lot of dual 80's, most of my ratchets are older 36 tooth. The dual 80's I do have work fine, never had one a part except my 1/2". I had the early 1/2" with the small back screws and I had had so much trouble with it. When the new style came out, my dealer gave the new one in exchange for mine, and it wasn't even broken at the time. That is customer service and what I pay for. To me, the matco fine tooths have a more annoying qurik is you pretty much can't one handed reverse them, the drive always has to be rocket a bit before it will shift. I have five matcos and every one does it.

My SF80A skipped when I first got it - whole problem was that the faceplate kept backing off a little bit. I gave it a smidge of green (wicking) Loctite and it has never skipped since.

So SO is following the lead of Wilton... and to an extent Sears?!?! *L*

Best thing to do is let your pocketbook register your approval /disapproval.

You REALLY misinterpreted my post.

I have been extremely happy with everything I have bought from Snap On - the ratchets have been no exceptions. But, yes, I will vote with my pocketbook and continue to buy American made Snap On products.
