Is there a way to get the head a little more stable the one I inherited from my father is loose.

You have to remove the pin, and reset the spring or washer. Sometimes the pin is easy to take out, sometimes you Need a press. You could also put the forks in a vice and see if you can squeeze them in a bit, bet to have some alum. In the vice heads.
If the spring or washer is broke, holler at me I think I have some spares
