Snap-on FLF80: Crusty chrome? Leakage?

Can someone here with an FLF80 do me a favor? Post a close-up pic of the model number area on the handle. I noticed my brand new ebay'ed FLF80 has some "crusty" rough chrome areas where the model number is located. Just wondering if this is "normal" cause my S80A doesn't have this "flaw".

Thanks in advance!

I noticed some ratchets have rough edges around grooves. You can try to exchange, but they aren't going to warranty it.

Thanks everyone.

Balane- yours looks really good. Sadly, I can't say the same for mine.

Skang- well that *****, there shouldn't be an imperfect finish on these ratchets. I would consider this a manufacture defect. If this thing cost $30 I could care less, but I paid top dollars and I expect top quality. I'll take a picture once I get home.

I came home to take some pictures of the ratchet and I noticed that it was leaking fluid out of the sealed area! Aren't sealed ratchets not suppose to leak? Especially since this is new. What's going on Snap-on?

Anyways, here are some pics of the crusty polishing job:

and of the leakage:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that ratchet. You can't polish inside the numbers or the grooves; it's physically impossible. And the grease leaking around the square drive is perfectly normal.

^ I agree with the grease, but my F80 is polished nice in the grooves

Personally, my SO dealer would laugh @ me if I tried to get that replaced. Not to say it isn't your perogative to do it, but that's a perfectly good ratchet.

As others have said, the leakage is normal.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to try to get a replacement since you guys confirmed it's normal. It's nice to have reassurance.

I took the ratchet apart and filled her up with some RLL. Dual 80 is much more complicated internally compared to the 30-60 teeth ratchets I've opened up. It's much quieter and smoother now. I think RLL is thicker than Superlube so it's not leaking out, but only time will tell.

Man, I'm one of the pickiest MF'ers I know, and that wouldn't have even crossed my radar. Besides, once you accidentally kick it across a concrete floor the new scratches will distract you anyway.

if you think of warrantying this ratchet for the rough area in the part number area you are driving the cost up on a new one and everyone else from here on out will have to pay more for their ratchet because you couldn't live with a missed buffed spot.

i apologize if i am coming off hard on you but if everyone wants their ratchet warrantied for this, snap on will have to drastically change or even start cutting costs by making them somewhere else. the USA stampings will start to disappear and everything will be a big question mark kinda like mac tools and craftsman tools

Yeah, I think I have OCD with details. :willy_nil

Put away the chrome polish and microfiber cloth and go use that bad boy!

You bought it on ebay, tough luck. millions of people would be happy to have that ratchet. Use it.

I don't understand your comment. Just because something is bought off ebay shouldn't mean that it's inferior to what I can get off of the truck. :dunno:

I get what you're saying completely, but imagine if you bought a KRL box and you have a scratch on your brand new box. I'm sure it would bother the **** out of most people just having the thought of something that is brand new and already has a defect.

While I'm choosing to not go through warranty for this after I find that it's fairly common for them to have imperfect polishing, I still believe that if someone pays a premium, they should premium quality.

The only time I had to turn in a new S-O ratchet was when I got one that had its cover plate sitting lower than the sides (not flush). But in that case, I knew for a fact that it was a defect. Nonetheless, I'm sure the dealer turned around and sold that ratchet to somebody else...

But you did not buy it off the truck. You bought it on ebay. You bought it used, not new. If it was new it would have been straight from snapon.com or the truck.

I've been buying Snap On ratchets since 1988. I still have most of them. I do not own any Dual 80's but my older ratchets look like the pics you posted. I've never looked at a ratchet that closely until you posted. Looks normal on my MAC and MATCO ratchets also.

If you see how the Snap On ratchets are smoothed and polished I would think it depends on were in the machine the ratchet is placed.

There are plenty of sealed and brand new Snap-on stuff on ebay. Your logic about ebay is :lol_hitti.

I was watching how the ratchets were made on Youtube the other day. You're probably right on that.

That discrepancy was caused by a worn out cutting bit on the lathe they use to cut the grooves. As soon as they replaced the bit, the next ratchet was probably perfect.
