Picked up a Snap On gax36 at pawn shop priced to cheap to leave there. Anyone else have one of these? What job do you use them on? 1/2" reduced to 3/8 doesn't seem to common so must have a few specific jobs.

The first poster answer the question. It is designed for doing transmission R&R. If you have ever done transmission work you will understand the need.

I use my 20" 1/2 to 3/8 all the time. Mostly to do motor mounts on FWD cars.

If you're planning on buying one of these, it might be worth it to take a look at Matco's CXP36BBA. Unlike Snap-on's GAX36, the Matco piece is 1/2" for the length of the extension, reducing to 3/8" only at the end. I've used both. The Matco is a good bit heavier, but I felt that it works better with an impact (less flex).

I've seen a MAC version built in exactly the same manner as you describe...1/2" all the way, 3/8" drive only at the drive end..

The Matco extension does not lock the sockets on firmly and falls off the impact. The Mac extensions are a bit better. I have 2 36" and one 24" and 12" used to pull and build a lot of transmissions.

I got a 24" I think and only used it a few times now for transmission bell housing bolts. That with a 3/8" drive flex socket on the end works great to get to those hard to reach bolts. It's one of those tools that you won't use much but it sure is nice to have when you need it.
