Call the number on his truck, explain that you live in the neighborhood but don't want to disturb his downtime and what would be a good time and place to meet with him and buy some tools.

I do heating and air conditioning, I have my commercial truck sitting on my driveway. People think it is an invitation to come and get quotes or have me take a quick look at their refrigerator or hot water tank.

I point at the number on the van and tell them to call it.

Leaving your number on his truck is a good idea, I would definitely appreciate that.

Just go to Harbor Freight, they are always happy to see you and will give you presents like a flashlight or scissors (no running with those).

Just call. if he has kids do not call too late. call him when you see him leave one morning. then let him know you are a neighbor. I do not get too many people stopping by the house anymore, and I have 2 trucks in the driveway.

I would call him. One of the dealers near me has hours on Wednesday evening that you can stop at his house and buy tools if the truck doesn't stop at your shop.

I would call him. I would not put your card on his truck, he might not be to happy seeing some stranger around his truck.

Always call during business hours, or introduce yourself neighbor :)

Had a neighbor who was Snap-On dealer, he was the "mayor" of the block, so he always invited the gearheads to come on over. In return the gearheads would look out for his truck and on rare occassions that relationship helped stop a crime in progress. My current Snap On guy would go out on a limb for me and my co workers. I've repaired snapped cam gear holders for him, and whatever else that needed to be welded. In each case he knocks $50-100 off my bill, when it came time to replace his exhaust, I built him a 4" SS system w/ MagnaFlow RV mufflers, as he was sick and his son took over for a few weeks while he was in the hospital. He wiped out my bill completely upon his return.

Giv him a call and see if he can arrange a time for you to come over.

I have a SO man around the corner and have been going to his house for years. Usually I call him during the day and tell him what I need and we usually agree for me to come over around 7PM. I've never gone over just to browse in the truck, and I really don't know if that would go over too well.

I'd just give him a call, tell him you're a neighbour and give him the option of catching up with him on his route or meeting him at his house after hours.

IF I was the SO guy I'd offer to meet you at my house because I kinda like getting to know my neighbours and if i sold some tools in the process, all the better.....and IMHO, it's better the devil you know than the devil you don't know. Saying that, I'd also mention that my personal home time is valuable to me and not to take advantage of it. Besides, It's not like the contents of a Snap On truck are a secret. They're rolling billboards for God's sake!!

That's a good attitude to have. Some of us accountants might have more money to spend than some mechanics!! :) :) :)

I do not judge you when you come on the truck. Some of the roughest ( homeless looking ) guys I have spend the most money. Snap On customers for life.

lol...that's what I did to the local guy here. I passed by him on my way home and did a u turn. followed him to his next stop where he was parking his truck and on his way to lunch so I just introduced myself and asked for a catalogue. He seemed a little taken aback but wrote his number in the catalogue. He did admit he was a little surprized when I called him the following week and met him on his route to pick up a few things.

95% of the time the customer never returns.
same goes for insurance quotes. I have had 1 in 9 years ever buy anything again.
so I do not give out big insurance quotes without some form of compensation.

I used to work with someone, and by the look of them you would think they were homeless. Mean while if you see their house, you think "...WTF!" Average sized home, but big piece of property, and around here that costs a lot(I am on about 3/4 of an acre and its about $750K). 4 post in the garage along with a ton of tools, 2 Powerstrokes, one IDI and one DI, his E350 work van, and he has a decent amount of toys also.

If I were the dealer I would embrace any neighbor wanting to buy tools. It wouldn't be for the $'s more then it would be to get to know those around you so they'd be more willing to call if they ever notice anything suspicious going around near the truck.

^That would be my #1 thought. I would hook them up just so if anything was going down, they would help me out. Sadly, in my area, no one would be pulling guns out on thieves.

As a small business owner, I realize that my ability to feed my family DEPENDS on serving my customers. I put my cell phone number on my business cards and answer it when someone calls. If I can't answer it, I return calls to anyone that leaves a message as soon as I can. Business is business.

Most of my "customers" are very respectful of my time off. Having said that, the goodwill that I build by making an after hours office visit is worth much more than just about any advertising I could pay for.

If I were your neighbor, I would be happy to have you as a new client. Especially if you were just stopping by/calling to set up an appointment during my normal hours.

just because your neighbor has a snap on tool truck doesn't mean he is selling tools.

my neighbor across the street had a mac tools truck. he didn't sell tools. he turned it into a mobile handyman work truck to cart around all his wood working tools and various pieces of wood. he said no matter where he went people would ask to look around in the truck. he told them its not what your expecting lol

I have a feeling MAC (or SO) wouldn't approve of using their logo on a truck used for another business or personal purpose.

I'd be surprised if the franchise agreement doesn't cover that topic.

Ithink it does. when we sell my old truck we will have to consult the agreement to see what we need to do to the decals. I hope I can leave them be.
