Culling all the info from prior threads about Snap-on hard handle conversions, I thought it would be helpful to create a size table so folks can make the best choice for their projects. It looks like Snap-on has updated some part numbers too after reintroducing the hard handle ratchets. I'm hoping the community can help me fill this out from real life experience and measurements, thanks! As people reply I'll edit the original post to include the new info.

Does anyone own and could measure the handles on the new 1/2" hard handle standard or flex ratchets (SHFD80, etc.) and an SDD4A screwdriver?

PART NUMBERLENGTHWIDTH (widest)CORE DIAMETER
SCREWDRIVER HANDLES
SDD8A25 1/2"1 9/16"3/8"
SDD6A24 7/8"1 7/16"5/16"
SDD5R1R4 3/8"1 3/8"1/4"
SDD4A2??1/4"
SDD2A23 5/8"1 1/4"7/32" & 3/16"
RATCHET HANDLES
1/4 THD72-123 7/32"63/64"11/32"
3/8 FHD80-123 11/16"1 7/64"23/64"
1/2 SHD80A12???
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
Files, Pry Bars, etc.?
THD72-12 equivalent:
  • TR107A
  • Williams SDE-4

I have a bag full of SO hard handles, and one of those iGaging AO fractional digital calipers discussed in another thread. My Mitutoyos don't do fractions

Length, width across flats, widest, bore

SDD8 5-1/2 1-5/16, 1-9/16 3/8
SDD6 4-7/8 1-3/16, 1-7/16 [n/a - already drilled]
SDD5 4-3/8 1-1/8, 1-3/8 1/4
SDD2 3-5/8 1-1/32, 1-1/4 3/16

THD72 3-7/32 13/16, 63/64 11/32
FHD80 3-11/16 29/32, 1-7/64 23/64

Some of my ratchets (e.g. THNF72, FHNF100) originally with comfort grips have 2-3 different diameters on the shank. Be sure to check before any drilling.

Trivia: TRI07A tire valve tool handle is the same as THD72 but the entire tool costs <2/3 what the ratchet handle alone costs.

Why are hard handles so damn expensive?

The Williams USA screwdriver handles track the SDD handles but are way cheaper (black only, of course). The smaller electronic ones with non-keystone tips Match the THD and FHD sizes pretty well. I' re-handled a bunch of '80s vintage prybars, picks, awls, etc. (with old crumbling handles) with Williams handles.

Edit: Williams SDE-4 screwdriver handle is the same size as THD72-12.

Would anyone be willing to measure their Snap-on 1/2" ratchet hard handle dimensions, specifically the handle length, width across flats, and width at its widest? Thank you!

I'd be interested in this, too. They look smaller than the SDD8. I removed the SDD8 handles from my 1/2" ratchets and replaced with original comfort grips because the SDD8 was just too bulky (even on a 24" flex).

Still, why are the ratchet hard handles stupid expensive compared to the SDDs? Maybe next time I meet the (stupid; another thread) free shipping minimum, I'll add one to my order. No trucks I can flag down here.

Exactly! Twice the price of the screwdriver handles and more than a decent used USA ratchet. I'm thinking the SDD6 is closer in size to the 1/2" ratchet, but am curious by how much still.

I've put both SDD6 and SDD8 on 1/2" ratchets. The SDD8 is OK for longer ones (SHLLF80) but a bit much for the shorter SH80 and SHLF80. I had to drill the SDD6 almost to the end.

Other SO comfort grips in 3/8 are too long for an SDD2 and have to be cut. SDD2 is the same length as the 3/8 "standard" hard handle but a bit fatter. I found a cut-off from a FHF80 to fit a "standard "ratchet hard grip (not SDD) and the cutoff was just over an inch. SDD5 will generally fit but a little too big for me.

Anyone notice the price for comfort grips (e.g. FH80-12) has doubled recently?

Hint: When drilling SDDs, go 1/64" at a time to stay centered. Otherwise, you'll drift and end up crooked.

The SDD6 is the same external dimensions as the SHD80A12. I don't have a spare SHD80A12 to measure the bore diameter and depth right now.

IIRC going from a soft grip to the hard grip on the 1/2" ratchet I still had to drill out the SHD80A12 and cut down the shank on the ratchet to get it to fit.
