I picked up this 1/2" impact from a friend when back in 07-08. It was our junior year in high school and his dad owns a dump truck company. This was one of the mechanics and my buddy didn't want it so he passed it along to me. Picked it up for 50$ back then.

I really don't know much about it other than it has done everything I have needed while working on cars and pick ups! and for 50 bucks I think I did good.

After seeing all the things on this site, I am wanting to do a little work on this impact... Would like to take it apart and clean/oil everything. Was wondering about what parts should be replaced if any? Also am debating on doing something with the outside as it is pretty beat up.. First thought was to powdercoat the body similar to the new Snap On green as I love that color! Or would that be frowned upon? Maybe just polish it up then? What do ya'll think??

Here are a few pics!

Not to rain on your parade but I had that same gun about 4 years ago and it needed rebuilt not long after the warranty was up.No I dont abuse my tools and yes I oiled it often.

Snap-on guns break hammer pins regularly. Why do you want to take it apart if its working fine ?

Painting is a waste of money as the paint will scratch off easily.Look at the used colored guns on ebay.

Hope you have better luck w/ this gun that I did.

Awhile ago when a coworker gave me his IM1500 for free I made a thread with more or less the same questions as you. It didn't take long before a few GJ'ers chimed in saying it was junk, as are all SO impacts, and not worth any attention. I still use it every day at work and it's a tank, despite their wonderful internet wisdom and insight. So let me be the first to say congratulations on your new acquisition, use it well!

To answer your question I would recommend just getting a cover for it from Snap On and calling it a day. It'll look a ton better and be protected from drops and whatnot as well.

I still use my 6500 often. Not as much as a tire guy would use a 1/2" impact, but enough.....IMO, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.....just get a new boot to cover the housing (I've worn out a couple and the SO man gives me new ones for free).
