Santa left me $160 in cash for tools. i want some nice screwdrivers. I was looking at the Snap On instinct ones. I had a few friends i should just get the Craftsman professional because the quality is the same. Is it worth it for these particular ones. I do get the snap on student discount too

You should milk that discount on the basics, screwdrivers included. If you plan on using them professionally, I say go for it, but don't get the soft grip version. The handles really get beat up over time and most SO guys don't replace the handles. Screwdrivers are an item that often get replaced, the tips wear over time and you some times use em for their non intended purpose.

There is NO way you can compare the Craftsman Pro's with the Snap On Instincts.
The quality difference is huge. Maybe if you're looking from 6 feet away you can't tell the difference, but I have both in my box, and in the hand, there is a big difference.

i bought some hard handles instincts for dad, good drivers. but id rather have the old style hard handle if i could find a good deal on ebay for a set.

Get a hard handle and call it a day.
cman pro are very nice for the money, snap-on are nicer still. honestly you could probably get away by just purchasing the snappy phillips and saving your money, discount or not, on the flats.
i have the soft grips. nothing will get chewed up unless youre careless. only the black sections are grippy, the colored areas are hard plastic.

i like that price. i think ill do that but i will be going to school for diesel tech so i want thses to stand up to the pro abuse and awant them to be easily warrantied if need be

I have the newer craftsman pro and the older black handled craftsman pro screwdrivers.
The older ones are darn near as nice as snap on but the newer red and black handled ones are not even close. They are ok especially for the money but they are no snap on. Just being a DYI mechanic they are a great buy. P

Get a new set of hard handle ones . Snap on has them here $130.00 , red too.
I could make arguements against spending the money for some SO tools, but not screwdrivers and especially not Phillips screwdrivers. Hard use tells on them quicker than almost any other tool. I've only had experience with hard handles and like them.

skip the Williams drivers. They're overrated and don't appear to stand up to the snap-on quality from what other members have posted here. Plus the instincts are leagues better in comfort and grip. Theres a reason snap-on discontinued those square hard handle drivers. Some guys are a glutton for punishment I guess but if you took one of each and went at a loctited Phillips screw that hasn't been removed in years you'll very quickly find out which one is better on the hand and the screw.

I have a set of the new hard handle snap on's and the soft grip snap on's. Love them both. If you're getting the student discount like I was when i got mine, get the snap-on's, you won't regret it!

Picked up a couple sets a couple weeks ago that were on sale from the local snappy guy.

I hate to be a fanboy but the Instinct handles are by far the most comfortable screwdriver handle I've ever used. You can easily apply much more torque with an Instinct vs a hard handle
If you are going to go to tech school hold out and talk to the Snap-on rep for the school. A bunch of buddy's of mine went to various tech schools and received 50% off of Snap-on hand tools.
It is worth a try!
