I have the SO 3/8 impact. I love it. I don't have any experience w/ the IR cordless (I use thier air tools though) but a couple guys at work have had the Milwaukee but it doesn't hold up well. My Milwaukee battery ratchet only lasted about 6 months.

I recently bought the fuel 1/2 and 3/8 inch impacts. I chose them for the following reasons-

Was able to walk into HD and pick them up.
Like the fact that there is always a rep from Milwaukee in my HD.
Liked the straight head verses the angled head on the IR ( personal preference )
Like the light on the Milwaukee.
There is a Milwaukee service center not far from were I live.
can add additional Milwaukee tools down the road.

These guns are great , the 1/2 inch is a beast and removes any fastener I throw at it without hesitation. super impressed with these impacts.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread here, but what about the air tools? Are the Milwaukee ones worth looking into? I like them for the same reason as you like your fuel impacts - right there at HD, a rep is always there, and they don't seem to be out of my reach financially.

I had the older Nicad Snapon gun and it was great, held up well. I sold it for what I had into it to put the money towards the Milwaukee for the soul purpose of condensing my charging stations down. I would recommend the Milwaukee because it's quality, financially smarter IMO, and has the most options when it comes to adding on to your cordless collection.

If you're going to use it heavily, I'd go IR hands down. They are the standard that everyone else compares themselves to, and they have decades of experience building impact guns that thrive and survive in grueling environments. I own both the W5150 and the W7150.

And for the record, I'm not a Milwaukee hater. I have most every tool in their M12 line, including every ratchet and impact that they offer. I don't own one, but I have compared the M18 high-torque impact to the IR and I believe the IR is better built, feels better, and is a better choice.

My 3¢ worth - adjusted for inflation.

Me I the only one I haven't had is the milwaukee and it is the one I would get if I did it all over again just due to the pure warranty stand point. It would be milwaukee, snap on then IR in that order. Warranty is important and milwaukee is the best and easiest IMO

If you are like a home owner and use these once every few months it doesn't matter they will all hold up

I'm going to be a John Deere tech so I need something that's really going to hold up.

Get the Milwaukee, they work great I just bought a 1/2" impact, runs circles around my Snap On, plus it is like half the price.

I used to be a big Snap On fan boy, not so much any more especially the Snap On cordless tools and air tools. Milwaukee for cordless, I/R for air.

This is my take on it as well.

1) If you are going to school to learn how to fix stuff, you should be eligible for SEP discount. That should makes the Snap On model the cheapest.

2) If you are working professionally, you may well have tool truck service. That would likely be Snap On, so again, that would tip the scales in Snap On's favor.

3) If, as Jake reports above, you can sell your used Snap On gun for what you paid for it, that alone makes it the world's best deal hands down. I doubt any gun you can buy at HD will hold it's value like that.

4) The race for the most powerful gun, may quickly become irrelevant. The new crank pulley sockets make a mediocre gun perform like a top model. I have a 500ftlb Bosch that does everything I ask of it.

My advice is to therefore choose a gun that is small and light, shares batteries with other power tools you need or have, and has the easiest warranty. I wouldn't get too involved with one manufacturer's removal torque claims. I think they are junk science. And those new sockets make any real performance difference between these guns irrelevant.

So has the best 3/8 impact of the 3 (which I use the most)

Ir is great at there 1/2 impact

Milwaukee has the most versatile line of the 3

I would go with Milwaukee over all the 3

How do you go about doing this???

Either register online on the SEP website, or contact the Snap On rep at your school (if available).

The SEP website shows the 3/8" 18v Lithium impact for 370 bucks plus tax, and the 1/2" for 420 plus tax.

I prefer Milwaukee because the batteries are cheap and easy to get, and the cordless tools have a way better warranty than Snap On (5 year vs. 1 year). A SO 18v lithium battery is 150 bucks after the discount, Milwaukee is half that, and they have a ton of different tools on the M18 platform too.

For the record I bought my gun second hand off the truck with a fresh rebuild for $100, it was a 3/8 version but the point is it held it's value in what I paid for four years and it made me money.

I like the Snap-On stuff, but their li-ion impacts **** IMO.( aka CT7850, CT8810) They have a lag when you pull the trigger. I liked the W7150 much better.

I like the lag. I just pull the trigger slightly and the light comes on to help me get lined up. I don't really notice a lag

i love my Milwaukee 1/2, im not a professional just work at home. the old snap on 1/2 i had was a *************, i cant imagine it was working properly but didnt care to spend money on it. the Milwaukee impact cost $179 around christmas plus battery and charger which i think was another $60 purchased around christmas time again.

i also have the 3/8s Milwaukee too. both are the fuel versions
