Snap on is back at it with indexing ratchets (?)

I don’t know where this photo originated from, I copied it from a post I found on Facebook.
It seems that snapon will be once again making a multi position ratchet. That looks like a dual 80 head (doesn’t it?)

Anyone know the scoop?

I know the history with the srtc ratchets (i have one in 1/4”) and snapon “stealing” the design and therefore getting sued or something like that

Looks like a dual 80 head to me. That should make it at least a $300 ratchet.

I noticed in their new catalog that that have started making some tools that were discontinued years ago. Maybe they noticed that people were paying a premium for some discontinued tools on Ebay and figured they would start making them again.

I have a Matco 3/8" that when paired with a crowfoot has been very useful for hydraulic hose fittings in very tight places.

It’s not so much about getting around corners, but more convenient for tight areas where you can only swing the ratchet handle so far back and forth, and you can use a push-pull method on the handle to ratchet the fastener

I've used the indexing ratcheting wrenches on an Allroad belt change. Never had a use for a ratchet (I have the Armstrong) but I'm sure sometime between now and death I'll want it once....on a Saturday night... at 11pm

Yes, they are in the works.
SO released a video last month featuring these, as well as the new speeder ratchet with the rotating handle.
The roto bit ratchets are fairly new too, but not in the video.

It seems to me that this tool would be more versatile with a locking flex head in addition to the indexing. Proto made a non-locking style of this years ago.

I inherited an indexing ratchet and thought it was a gimmicky pos. Then I had a starter that I didn't have the right combination of extensions to access a bolt on. I wouldn't have been able to get done without it.

I have a 3/8 drive Snap On one for years. Over the course of those years I’ve used maybe 5or 6 times but when I did it was a life saver.

Sold my 1/4 drive I purchased 18 years ago for more than what I paid. In eighteen years there was not one situation that demanded it.

I remember when I first saw those, I *had* to have a couple.

I bought an Armstrong 1/2 drive from Cripe a number of years back. I used it a little, and never needed the index feature. I sold it at a profit- on CL no less.

I also still have a Proto 5257L index head/hard plastic handle in 3/8 and feel it is superior to the Armstrong, only because the index can rotate a full 360°, IIRC the Armstrong was 270°. Otherwise, the Armstrong had a nicer mechanism (strangely a SK Tuff 1/Facom 72t unit) and was most likely stronger of the 2 designs, there were even rebuild kits for the index mechanism itself.

That said, I got the Proto nos for a song off eBay about the same number of years back. It's weird, so why not. There are also flex/index versions of the Proto, if you have some really crazy stuff to work on. I think those are unique.

It's cool they're making a resurgence, even if I never needed one.

I got one of those protos NOS cheap, too, a while back. I think it was through grainger.
The indexing part failed on me eventually and proto warrantied it out.. they gave me a 1/4” drive flex head with the facom head In it.

I liked that proto but it would have been so much better with a fine tooth head, rather than the 30 tooth Mac head it used. when you needed to push/pull the handle to get something loose in a tight spot, and the fastener didn’t have any resistance on the threads, the next tooth would never engage in the head

I have the HF 3/8 one and like it, I used it alot for brake caliper bracket bolts before I got my M12 ratchet

The picture I shared isn’t the same as the photo you have. That’s cool though, I’ve never seen the f936mp.
I reached out to snapon with my photo and they confirmed its a new ratchet that’s about to come out.
Some areas have a bogo deal on it where you get it free with the new FDX sockets

No worries. Your flyer says 2001 on it.. I wonder if they only got a handful of those ratchets out on the street before they had to cease and desist or whatever due to the patent on the indexing part

These sockets fit TIGHT

The indexing mechanism on the new ratchet is really stout compared to what was on the older version from the late 90s

I have that exact ratchet, SRTC 1/4” index, in your hand(picture) in my toolbox. I bought it on ebay about 5 months ago. I can tell it’s the same one because of the markings on the head of it. Wondering if it was you who sold it to me. Used it quite a bit, looking for a rebuild kit for the index part of it. Like you stated has blue point guts, I checked around and can’t find any BP kits. Teeth are just a little worn out and it’s not quite as tight as it should be, I counted 44 teeth just not sure if I missed any

I’ve used mine once where I used the indexing feature, maybe fifteen years ago, on a late 1980s four cylinder Ford Ranger timing belt change, I believe. Mine is a Stanley, and offers the quick release feature. When access is hard you hate to lose the socket. Due to the length of the ratchet, I don’t use it enough to wear it out, so, not Snap-On, but sufficient.

I've had one of those for the past 15 years. Great tool for tearing down engine parts that have long bolts... things like head bolts and such.

The head isn’t “bluepoint”… the tool was made by a place called srtc (superior ratchet and tool co) and sold through snapon with a BP part number. The ratchet head is no longer available, but the index portion might be able to be found through snapon.. they just released 1/4” drive indexable ratchets. My SO guy said on Wednesday that he had a box of them at home that just came in.
Your best bet would be to try and warranty the whole tool towards the new version.
That can be tricky with some dealers since the tool doesn’t say snap on anywhere on it…
What I did when my srtc broke was I found a newer version on eBay that HAD bluepoint stamped in the handle in place of srtc. I swapped the broken guts into the bluepoint and traded it in on another ratchet with the snapon truck

That price is amazing compare to their online pricing. I'd have some Snap-on tools if those deals were available somewhere other than a tool truck.

Yeah I never really thought about that, but you can’t get any of the deals unless you have a truck.
Most of my snap on collection is based on scoring stuff through bogo deals. Stuff is too expensive, but I love quality tools. I jump on the bogos all of the time because it makes the tools seem more worth it
