Hi all - this is my first time posting here, 32 year old guy living in South Africa.

I am no major vintage tool collector but I do have a lot of old tools (from my late grandfather and father) which i use mostly for my classic car / hot rodding problem. I also love all things vintage and I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to tool quality. I came across an old Snap-On tool box which I had to have, thanks to this forum I was able to identify it as a K60 (pictures below).

I have no plans to restore the box, I love the patina on it and will only give it a good clean up, polish and then use it for my most prized tools :)

I would like to hopefully find the answers to three main questions. The first two are just for interest's sake really.

Firstly, is there any way of accurately dating the box? I have had a look for a date stamp but the only stamp I can find is "Made in USA" at the bottom right hand corer of the box. I read that sometimes things fall behind the drawers which can assist in dating it, I removed one of the bottom drawers and lo and behold there was an old South African Air Force form dated 1942.

Secondly, I can't seem to find pictures of a K60 with the same drawer / main door handles that mine has - most have a curved chrome looking handle, these are a bit different as you can see from the pics. Does anyone know if the originals were replaced at some point or are these handles original Snap-On? Or is it a "who knows" kind of question.

Finally, would anyone be able to point me to somewhere that could supply a new lock & key for the box? Do the new Snap-On locks fit these old boxes? Would also like to try source the chrome beadings that appear beside the Snap-On badge (although I do know that this one is probably impossible).

Many thanks & regards, Graham

(I tried to insert images but couldn't figure it out - hopefully they are included as attachments).

There is a website called easykeys.com that might be able to make a key for that box. Take a pic of the lock front with the number on it and most of the time the can cut a key to fit your lock. I have used them several times and there have only been 3 boxes I have not had keys made for. Really nice box and good luck!

I have the same box along with the matching bottom roller. Yours is an earlier example that I would date closer to the 1939-40 time frame. You can go to the collectingsnapon.com site and look at the catalogs from that period and you'll find your box.

The handles on your box are not original and can easily be replaced with period correct handles.

Great find. There are people here who have been searching for years for the box that you have.

Welcome to the site.
