Snap-on knife review

I reviewed the new CRKT Onion-designed Snap-on Wrinkle knife over at ToolGuyd.

Since it might be a time-sensitive item I only tested it with 2-weeks of casual use rather than rotating it in and out of EDC for longer.

I can't say I'm head over heels gaga for it, but I do like design and its workmanship is quite good. It has a very smooth bearing system and the blade profile makes it very versatile imho. The only downside is the price - $125 via Snap-on dealer, presumably because of the knife's collectability.

For this price I would have expected slightly better steel, but the AUS 8 is actually decent. Edge retention could be better in theory, but in practice I don't think it will need honing or sharpening for quite a while.

Made in Taiwan, and very well made at that.

I agree. Thy should have been able to put a better blade steel at the $125 price point. I haven't had great experiences with AUS-8. I think the Snap-On name stamped on the blade was their justification to double the price of what should be a $60-70 retail blade. Ill take my Spyderco Delica 4 FRN for ~$60 anyday. Just my $.02.

I passed on this knife, didnt like the shape and how it felt in my hand.for that price it was not worth it.ill pass and keep my favorite green cf blur.

$125 is indeed steep. I'd have a hard time dropping that kind of money on it when I could buy A Cold Steel for half.

I have a Delica 4 myself and love it for small tasks, but it's definitely smallish compared to the Wrinkle. Not really apples to apples.

Regardless of price, that wrinkle knife is bigger than I like for one to carry around all the time. I'm just cutting open parts boxes and packaging and such. I just snagged the last of the old Speedsafe knives.

Hard to say, but the designs are completely different, and not just the size.

It's close in size to a Zero Tolerance 0550.

I think the Leek will remain one of my top favorites as well, despite my having bought better knives since.

Stuey should do a review on the Gerber Gator. It's a fantastic knife that feels extremely well in the hand with its firm rubber grip.

If you buy that one, you're getting 154CM steel, not S30V.

There are some fine Benchmades at that price.

FYI, Woot (Sports section) has the red Wrinkle knife for $30 plus $5 flat rate shipping.

Looks like this might have been a special run since CRKT's site still lists this as a Snap-on exclusive.

That's good steel but not 125 dollars good. Definitely a fancy pants looking knife right there.

Always got to watch for burrs with aus 8. That's imported steel (taiwan) by the way. Global component knife. I don't believe any claims to the contrary, us mfgs don't use this spec steel to make 100% us knives; you get the vg series for the better knives or the 4xx (420 440) steel. Either the steel is from taiwan or the blade was made in taiwan in my opinion. What does [kershaw] say about this?

Oh...you said it was crkt. Meh. They make excellent cheap knives like the drifter but nothing I would consider permanent carry. Cool finish but the carpet don't match the drapes.
