Picked up this Snap-on KR-23 Mechanics Chest today. Definitely in rough shape, appears the exterior has been repainted olive drab, and the lid has been riveted. The interior of drawers appear to have the original wrinkle grey color (see pic). Given condition, this one will likely be my first restore so both excited and nervous.

Now for the question:
The latch to secure the lid appears original design based on reviewing the 1948 Snap-on catalog and an eBay auction. What’s peculiar is that the latch is marked “Stanley Made in USA.” Does anyone on the site have a box and confirm whether this is correct or not?

Thanks in advance and hope you enjoy the pics.

As far as the latch goes, does it appear to be attached in some form of makeshift way? Or does the attachment appear to be as old as the box?

No, it does not appear to be makeshift and the cutouts on the corner match the 1948 Snap-on catalog. It just seems odd that a Stanley latch would be used; however, they have been around longer.

Stanley was a supplier for those latches. Here is one from 40s I have been stashing screwdrivers in.

Checked my KRA-21A for the heck of it, and stanley latch on it too. Not sure what vintage it is. But pretty sure it's gonna be my little girls first real toolbox in a few years if she's interested.
