Are there ant good resources for Snap-on toolbox parts for older tool chests? I have a Snap-on KR-550b chest that is missing the chrome looking drawer pull fronts for each drawer, the top flip top hinges and the chrome looking edging is a bit beat up.

Anyone have spare parts or know of a resource that carries these type parts? Looks like Snap-on doesn't sell parts for this box any longer according to their website.

Thanks!

The KR550B is very similar top box on the right. The one pictured is a KR650, which has a shock to hold the lid open and ball bearing slides. The 550 has friction slides and a latch to hold the lid open

jherb, I should've known that, I have a 650 myself. For some reason I was thinking it was a full length box that fits on the 560.

What does your 555 look like?

Unfortunately snap on is really stripping down their inventory and support of the older, larger friction slide boxes. I'd try giving them a call and hopefully you get someone that gives a damn, looks like they deleted that model from the parts catalog online.

Here is the aforementioned chest. I found where they stamped the box on the back with the model number and year but I cannot make out if it say 650B or 550B for the first digit is a very shallow stamp. It is a 1983 model so I'm guessing it is a 550B and will check collectingsnapon.com to be sure. I will try calling Snap-on tomorrow to see if they do have parts and go from there. She has good bones as they say but tools to have been miss-treated. Thanks to all that have weighed in.

KR550 is a 36" wide 20" deep friction slide top chest, KR555 is the matching bottom

KR650 is the ball bearing version top chest (barring the narrow drawers), KR655 is the ball bearing version matching bottom.

Being 1983, that should be a KR550, all friction slides, maybe except for the bottom most drawer.

all the kr550's ive seen have a friction slide bottom drawer.
since the OP's box is dated '83, i wonder if it even had the drawer trim on it originally? :headscrat
some of SO's boxes from the early 80's didnt have the drawer trim....

I'm not 100% on that but around 83 was when they added the drawer trim and went to the more modern badge from the black square background badge. I'm pretty sure I've seen a few KR5xx boxes that had ball bearing slides on just the bottom drawer. Around 87 or so is when they switched over to full ball bearing and changed the series to KR6xx. :headscrat

Thank you for that info. The bottom drawer is friction and bet your right about the drawer trim. I now have a couple replacement keys on order so the reverb work has begun. Also removed the stupid wood deviders the previous owner glued into one of the drawers rather hastily.

the new style script badge may not be original... it was a hot selling item when they 1st came out. easy way to "update" an old box...

Just saw the picture, that box should have had drawer trim on it. The boxes had drawer trim before they changed the badge style.

BUT... the position of the badge changed. The older badge was in the upper right hand corner, newer in the upper left.

Edit: Hard to see in the pic, but are there holes for a badge on the upper right corner of the box?

I'm pretty sure 82 to 83 was the transition year from the older to more modern badge style. I have a 83 537 with the old badge and drawer trim. I've even seen a few dual badged boxes. IIRC the KR55x were the first boxes to have drawer trim back in the late 70s. :headscrat:

Selling: very observant. There are no holes for the badge in the upper right corner so it sounds like a transitional box. Did find what looks like the statement and it looks like she may have been a $1500 box used back in 2002 or that's as much as it had been paid down to at that time since the owner was making just $50 monthly payments. The statement was in the back of the box under the bottom drawer.

67Galaxie- Both my 555's are in this picture. Not the best pic. The 555B is all the way on the right and has all friction slides. The 555D is the middle bottom toolbox. Very similar to the 555B, but the bottom drawer is ball bearings. I really don't see any other differences between the 555B and 555D.
