Hello All

This is my first post after finding this forum.

I went today to look at a Snap On KR-557D and KR-537D Box that popped up on Facebook Marketplace. I rode over and looked at it. Back in an old barn. Pretty rough but complete...well missing keys and the lid emblem. Most drawers worked but it is in "as found in barn" condition.

Seller is asking $650 for the pair which, to me, is really high for condition. What would be a fair offer for the pair that pretty much need to be completely restored?

Are parts still available? Looks like it needs a lid prop and that missing emblem for sure

Thanks Guys !!

I paid 350$, IIRC, for a solid but well used set with some cosmetic damage small dents around '10-'11. Had no keys & some slides needed replacing.

It might clean up ok, but 650$ is too high for what you describe.

650 would be too high for the nice stack pictured above. 650 for a rough stack is robbery.

Find yourself another stack.

I am sure he would take a lower offer, but in fairness, I want to do my research before saying what I will pay. I hate when people low ball me on stuff with no clear reason other than a cheaper price.

I am thinking $200-$250 considering it condition.

I love the number of drawers in the box compared to newer boxes I have looked at. How does it work for you in you? Have you been pleased with it?

I used it as a complete set for a short while until I had to upgrade for more room. I use the KR557 at home with a different top (KRA59), I use the KR537 at work where it sits on my KRL1023.

I like the drawers particularly on the KR537 as I can sort tools more to my liking rather then making drawer dividers with "normal" box layout.

One guy I worked with had the complete stack, top middle & roller box. Made for a nice setup, albeit tall. His was newer as it had ball bearing slides instead of friction slides.

If I was selling this I'd expect it to bring $700-800 within a couple weeks out here.

That looks nice but it's missing the trim on the edges.

Note that picture is of a totally different box that belongs to someone else here, the picture is from several years ago. I posted it in this discussion just to show what that particular combination looks like.

I have that stack (537, 557 no 547 available then), I bought the new in 1974. Can the old sliders be replaced with roller ones?
No, but there is a way to make your sliders work very nicely.

Snap-on’s recommended technique:

Remove all drawers and clean every bit of old grease and dirt off with solvent. Then wipe off all of the solvent

Then rub a bar of paraffin wax on all sliding surfaces. You can buy bars of paraffin wax for canning purposes. It is cheap from grocery stores or mail order.

Reassemble the top drawer. Slide in and out about 10 times to knock off excess wax. Continue to work your way down the tool box with each drawer. Before you install the bottom drawer, vacuum up the paraffin wax bits at the bottom. Then install the last drawer.

You do not need a huge amount of wax. I tend to used more than I needed and it slightly increases the drag force.

The nice part is wax is a dry lubricant and tends to not collect Dirt like oil.

I find it usually makes a big difference, even on heavily loaded drawers.

This technique works well on most all tool box drawer slides, except for Kennedy which tends to be more hit or miss on the shallow tool chests (520, 526, etc.).
