alright so im 17 and i have a 3 peice stacking craftsman box but a teacher at my school is selling a kr 560 for $600 but im going to offer him $450, anyways, i know that box has all friction sliders exept the bottom drawer that is ball bearing, is there a way to change the friction slides to ball bearing or is it worth it? i was thinking maybe the ball bearing slides from the 660 would fit?

Yeah Jared, didn't you read the rules before you posted? You need to supply your last 6 months bank statements and current credit report before you post a question about freakin' drawer slides. Why does everything have to turn into an economics lession and a lecture about the dangers of debt?

While some may take words of wisdom as lecturing, some may take heed. Learning to differentiate wants from need is a skill best learned young. While the general 'feel' of the forum can sometime be described as lecturing... It may be for good reason.

"a wise man learns from other's mistakes, a fool his own. "

Buying a 500 dollar toolbox may not be as good as keeping your current craftsman and filling it with $500 in tools

And then there's assuming that just because the OP is 17 that (1) he doesn't have much money and/or a steady income, and (2) that he isn't responsible with it.

To answer the question, the friction slides are actually very good as long as they are kept lubed. I don't believe that they are interchangable with BB slides and the reward probably wouldn't be worth the cost.

Importantly I think everyone here is trying to help. While it may have come off as lecturing, I agree with the sentiment.

Buying the box is questionable and only the buyer knows whether he should. It is important to ask yourself whether it adds anything to your fledgling carreer or if it is tantamount to buying a name brand pair of jeans.

Buy the way, not saying don't buy it. Just saying, be sure it helps you out or be honest that it is just a want. Then make your judgement accordingly.

That aside, I think most can agree that modifying a high end box, whether feasible or not, might be a bit ambitious and not worth the effort. Again, many folks on here do things "worth the effort" just need to know that going in:)

Not sure that made sense, like the others, just trying to help.:headscrat

I assumed neither. I simply stated that I'd rather have $500 in tools, than spend 500 on a box, and I have a lot of tools.. And many tool boxes. I am guilty of thinking that a 17 year old, no matter how well he manages his income. When I was 17, it seemed I never had the right tools for the task at hand, and even now, when I do, I hate spending money on boxes, I'd much rather buy tools!

We can all keep speculating whether this kid "needs" this box or not but it's his decision. It amazes me how people like to decide how others should spend their money. The part that really rubbed me the wrong way was the response of "how much money do you make a week". It just seems very condesending to the OP. That guy sounds like a grumpy old man who wants to tell you how to build a clock when you ask what time it is.

My opinion? Depends on if the box you have is full yet. I can't justify buying another box if the one I have still has space. Don't forget, quality tools still do a quality job, even if they're kept in a cheaper box!

The first question is if you can legitimately afford it. What's your weekly income?

It's really obnoxious to answer a question with a question, especially about something that isn't your business. If I'm asking about purchasing something for a few hundred bucks one could assume that I can afford it. Alright dad?

To the OP, changing the slides isn't worth it unless they're damaged.

BUY THE BOX!

From a recovered Snap-On Tool Box addict. (14 tool boxes in 17 years).

The old slide system will work fine. Keep them lubed with white lube and you will have no problem.

Hell if I would have bought a Snap On the first time. It would have saved me from 2 Craftsman boxes.
