I got this from my great uncle that passed away a couple of years ago. I want to restore it to its former glory because it is a really nice tool box just needs a little TLC.

I assume it was made in 1956 because of the KR-56, but there is no date anywhere else on the box. Is there any part support for a product this old? the slides are pretty sticky and was going to replace them and have the thing painted. Not really sure were to begin on finding parts or am i better off cleaning them up.

Welcome,

Your great uncle's box is first seen in Snap On's catalogs in 1958. This makes the most sense to me because of the chrome logo that is attached to the front lid. It's a great box and the KR 56 is the model number. If dated it would be in the same location of your 4th photo. I have attached the catalog page that has this great box.

Parts are no longer available. To remove your drawers do a search on what you'll need to free up the slides. IMO I would first remove the drawers and give the box a thorough cleaning. Using only dawn dish detergent/water first graduate up to simple green/water but be careful of leaving it on too long because it will damage the paint. Once clean see if you can live with it by polishing it with car wax.

If you decide to restore anyone here can tell you it's not an easy task and the reason for cleaning it first.

Welcome to GJ.

The couple times I’ve taken an old box apart I try to keep the slides matched up so they go back exactly where they came from—wear patterns etc

I was given a 6 drawer box that looks exactly like a 1958 KR 56A, except there is no identification markings on the back of the box. The logo is missing from the front but the holes are in the right place and the correct width. Did anyone make a knockoff of this box??

Nice box, Jdurha7
These are nice boxes. My KRA-56 is 1955 is my first vintage box which started my collection. Still use it for keeping the tools I use more frequently around the house. It has a deeper top compartment compared to 9 drawer boxes and fits deep sockets better.
