The local dealer has a nice looking (from pic's) KR1000 for 2000$ (may be able to work on the price). Currently I have the 41" masterforce top & bottom box with their side box and I'm out of room if I add more stuff, which I will be doing in the near future.

My question is would a KR1000 be big enough? The thing that throws me off is the 30" depth vs. 18" (more like 28" vs 16-1/4", inside drawer depth)

I have a KRA59 26" top box and a KR537 32" top box that I could and likely would use with it (one or the other) The main thing I lose is the wide deep drawer that the Masterforce box has.

What do you think? Am I gaining room or equaling what I have?

Look up storage capacity in cubic inches for both and compare. This information is readily available online @ menards & SO websites. IMO the deep drawers found in high end boxes are nice to have and really set them apart from Menards/HF etc.

Kr1000 has about 9400 sq inches of drawer space. Masterforce top and bottom have about 5500 sq inches combined.

I wish my dealer would get one of these in. You could also look for a KR1100 top box to get a full width drawer.

the kr1000 is approx 29" deep, 54" wide, 48" tall. drawers are ball bearing. work surface is just the right height.

to me this box is the perfect size and the drawer layout is great. I am looking to get another so I can have side by side.

I would say $2000 is a tad high considering the toolbox is 20+ years old by now, mine was made in 87 which is early and I think they were all done in 93?

if you trade your masterforce in you might get a chunk of change off the kr1000!

Werid, my SO dealer down here in Madison had a KR1000 a few weeks ago too...how far north are you?

About a hour west of Rhinelander in the sticks, so to speak.

I Figured the cubic inches on both and the KR box is about 11,000 cu bigger then the current setup I have. I'm not sure how negotiable he's going to be on price, but I'm thinking about 1700$ may be the lowest. Wont know until I find out though. I agree 2000$ is a quite a bit.

Thanks for the input!

You're gaining room, lots of it. I had a 41" top and bottom Husky (aka Mac Economizer) full of tools and an HF 44" partly full of tools. Moved it all over to the KR1000 and I have a couple empty drawers.

FWIW, paid $900 for mine.

For comparison, I had a 40" SO top and bottom with full locker. Spec wise that combo came very close to the Krl 1022 I upgraded to. That said, once moved into the Krl, I had a ton more usable space.

I came to the conclusion after my current box started getting filled up that drawer size and placement have a LOT to do with how much useable space there is.

I started out using a KR557/KR537 top & bottom box and after a month got the Masterforce box set, because A; it was on sale for 618$ and B; I thought I would gain a lot more room, which I did but I ended up buying or bringing from home 3/4 drive stuff & wrenches to 2". So in a way I gained room and lost it at the same time.

As far as build quality goes and general beefiness, how does the KR1001 compare to the kr1000?

Beside drawer arrangement, basically very close. Don't pay any attention to the guy above. After all the anti Krl rants he has had, I'm starting to think he is a Mac dealer:lol:

Well, I ended up getting the box on monday. Turns out it was a repo for another dealer up here and S-O "own's" the box and my dealer is/was selling it for them. He didnt seem to interested in any trade in or deals so I ended up getting it for the 2000$ (not a great deal by any mean's, but I did need the upgrade).

It's an '89 dated box with a few stickers that need to come off, the detents in a couple of drawers really need to be replaced as they like to slide open a bit. All the drawers could stand to have them replaced though. Otherwise, it's in nice shape for the age. And I have room in it. I also plan on changing the locks so I can key alike the boxes I have at work.

Congrats. You can get new detents from Accuride, they'll send them to you for free. Of course that's assuming all the slides are still Accuride. If you were to call SO for replacement slides you won't get Accurides :(
