Snap On KR1000 makeover

Hey everybody I just purchased this 1990 snap on KR1000B box because my current hf 44 is just too small (after hanging out here for a few months ). Its in pretty good shape for its age, but ive been looking for a project and this is it. I talked to our paint guy through work and he said its not that pricey to paint it and make it look nice.. so my question is.. Is it against the rules of all that is snapon holiness to paint it electric orange???? I figure if I'm going through all the prep work I might as well make it the color I want. enough talking here she is. wish I tool more before pics.. also I have already taken my DA to it and the body is almost ready for paint, but I haven't touched the drawers except for pressure washing them

I say paint it any color of the rainbow. I've been studying on repainting my 2 year old KRL7022 just cuz I can.

Sometimes I just like to throw weirdness in the mix so I can get the universe out of order. Yeah there's those times I like to sit back drink a root beer and watch it all burn!!!!

yeah it was in pretty decent shape to begin with so it makes my life a little easier

oh and alpine white.. I freaking love that color... ill be asking my paint guy his thoughts lol. if I go snap on electric orange it might be easier to get touch up paint

Well, you all ready DA'ed it. So the factory seal has been broken. So paint / powder coat it what ever your happy with.

PS: First new tool box 10/79. 12/79 Christmas break. Painted it Imron Fire Thorn Red. Was working in a body shop and everyone at school had a red tool box. Not Me.

Old REM Line painted purple. It was a $50.00 Bottom box. So........

Menard's El-Cheap-O black Something. It will be some other color this summer!

Or a true candy coat.

Repainting an already pretty nice box is a double edged sword. Nice because you don't have to spend the time picking out dents, dings, rust pitting,etc that may never turn out. Downside is you are "ruining" a perfectly good factory paint job. Since it sounds like you have someone with the setup and skills to do a nice paint job go for it!

yeah I hear ya on the fact that it was decent to begin with, but instead of just a used box that's almost 30 years old, I feel like I'm breathing life into it again. this thing is built super solid I cant wait to get it all back together and throw all my tools in. got all the narrow drawers ready for paint now its just the wide ones.. hoping to have it at paint Tuesday but we will see. I got grandparents in town so progress might slow a little. and the guy who will be painting it is super talented. does everything from classics to brand new exotics. pretty excited to see how it turns out!!

Looks like a great project! I have a KR 660 and a KR 655 both the same vintage as your box. I have all of my tools in the 655 and a couple of side cabs (one is an older HF the other an older craftsman). My goal is to redo the 660 and move the tools over and then do the 655 in the same color (just haven't figured out which way to go). Great project!

still not sure exactly which orange to paint it but it will be orange of some shade. also the handle is half there but the other side is missing. aside from 110ish from snap on for a new krl style handle, anybody have any ideas for a cool custom handle? I would love to hear some ideas!

Yeah saw those and eBay and they are kinda cool but definitely not something I'd put on the box. I'm looking for simple.. I was thinking like a bigass combo wrench or something would be kinda cool

Nice box pick-up. Once you load it up with tools and start using it you will see how small the capacity of those Harbor Freak 44's actually are.

Absolutely the 44 seemed perfect until I put tools in it.. Then I was amazed at how small they are. So today I was at work (the box is at home until its finished) and I got half my slides all cleaned up and ready for some lube. I'm going to use a dry graphite on them. Yay or nay?

I just went through the same thing with my KR1000B and used SuperLube synthetic grease to lubricate the slides after I cleaned them all, which was time consuming to apply but worked great. If your drawer stops are worn out or missing, you can get free replacements from Accuride...this would be the most convenient time for you to deal with them.

x2 on both of these, especially the bumpstops. Accuride will get all the soft parts you need, email Jorge at this email, he is the guy that does the warranty stuff. He will need a pic of your slides for the proper stops.

ive got one im going to make over if you use simple green on the factory paint it runs right off and stains my concrete. its got some rust on the bottom as it was stored in a dirt floor barn before i got it.

interesting cause I used simple green to clean and pressure wash the first time and there was zero paint runoff even with the pressure washer. good luck these boxes are super cool and definitely worth the work (at least at this point )

i squirted mine 100% strength simple green and within the time it took for it to run down the box and drip there was stains.

mine was made in the 80's when they dipped the boxes

im gonna DA sand it and paint it.

There are rear detents and intermediate detents on all the slides except for the ones on the large lower right bottom drawer, which uses a rubber roller mounted with a rivet as the detent.

I found my KR in a dumpster on a Sunday...........my wife was with me and was not going to help me get it out............after some negotiation she agreed to help. Had to replace the bottom drawer slides and straighten one dent in a drawer. If I thought I could download a picture of it easily on this site I would do so.

You're the man! Thank you I'll see what Jorge sends me before i ask for the other pieces but I have a feeling it will just be the detents..

Also got started on the top today.. Solid oak from IKEA. It was cheaper than I could've made myself and so far I'm pleased with the finish and everything also I'm trying to figure out if I should make an access to the long storage compartment on top.. Thoughts? i still have to glue the extra pieces to the end and sand edges and whatnot but thats the general shape and size. also i know my pictures are **** but you do get to see the working conditions lol

Accuride sent me a full set of all the detents, so I'm sure all you have to do is ask for them.

i did ask for the detents and he said he will send me the detent bumpers. part number 2327-2663-YE . so i may have to send another email? ill wait to see what shows up.


also what do you guys use for drawer liners? the narrow drawers are simple to find but how do you get a drawer liner for the bigger drawers that are roughly 31x27 if i remember off the top of my head. the widest drawer liner i can find is only 24 inches wide and it would drive me crazy to have two pieces of liner in each drawer

Snap on still carries the liners, if you dont like those theres a company on here who sells it
