Any cool/unique ideas for a top that still allows access to the top secret drawer?
I am tempted to just do a hardwood full top, but I really do like using the top drawer for lengthy tools.

I guess there is no real "in between" solution. I'm going with a 2/3 cover and a 1/3 cover. The 2/3 will be "permanent" and I will just lift up the 1/3 cover to access the top lid.

I used to own one of those, how about if you made a 1/4 thick top out of steel or aluminum , stainless, etc, and of course cut it 2/3 and 1/3 whatever proportion it needs to be. But attach it to like 1" thick wood kind of like how the snap on tops are made. of course you would have to cap the perimeter with same metal to cover the wood. anyways. miter the wood to clear the hinges and weld the hinges on the underside that would all you would see is the seam .

I would also make it hang over the front a little bit like the snap on tops are, like flush with the corner trim.

On a KR1000, there is a long narrow compartment with a lid on the top of the box above the top row of drawers. It's generally hidden by the top mat. Since the kr1000 doesn't have a full width drawer, long tools can be stored there. Also since it's hidden and can be locked, it can be used as a security drawer. There I let the cat out of the bag.
