Snap On KR1000 value question

I have been looking for a new box for a while, and I have finally settled on wanting a Snap On box, after looking at a bunch of other brands. I want a box with 29" drawers, and found a KR1000 box. Did some searching on the forums, and all the threads are from a number of years ago, when it comes to value. I did find one that is a couple hours away, for $1500, and in the pictures it appears to be in good condition. I just don't know the values of these boxes, and when I look on the sites where boxes are listed, the prices are all over the place. Most I believe are unrealistic, since the boxes have been for sale for a while. Also, are there any other boxes that compare to the KR1000 in size that you would recommend?

Depends on who you ask. I think a used KR1000 in cherry condition is worth more than a brand new box of that same size because of the build quality.

Is it early model with single lock or later model with 2 locks and logo on the right .
I kind of prefer the later version 1000b, drawer revisions and bb slides.
If in proper good clean order I probably pay 1300 but I do really like that box so my value if it super clean be higher than some .
They are solid boxes and proper deep 29"
Drawer layout not what modern techs like but I do.
Not super popular so that has reflect in price a little .

It has the 2 locks, and the logo on the right side. I have just come across another box that is the same lower box, and this also has the KR690 on top. Seller is asking $2250 for that combination. They both look to be in comparable condition. Neither ad mentions the liners or keys, so that might be an added expense, although I don't need key. I have never had a need to lock my boxes in my garage.

I paid $1500 for my older one that needed paint and $800 for my newer one that just needed clean-up. They are great boxes!

I paid 2 grand for my nice one, and $900 for my not so nice one.

They are outstanding toolboxes, they hold a lot of tools.

I routinely moved mine from building to building on a forklift full of tools. Never had a lick of trouble.

I have never had a need to lock my boxes in my garage.

I got this issue on my shop boxes, do I pack everything up and lock it or leave as is ready to carry on in morning ...

I was referring to my home garage. If they get into the home, and then into the garage, they can do more damage if the boxes are locked, and they try to get into them by force. Just like at work, where we leave the cash register drawer open, because the cash in the drawer isn't worth the damage that a thief will do tying to get into it. Besides, the alarms will catch them quickly, but not quick enough to keep them from doing damage before the police arrive.

I remember seeing one on craigslist for $1000 and a co worker who had one said he bought one used for $1000 a long time ago.

I paid 600 for mine, single lock with the webbing in some drawers. Also came with a large, 48 inch wide, 22 in deep ball bearing husky top chest. Def a higher level top chest as far as husky goes.
Also had new or freshly lubed slides that all work smooth. It is ball bearing.

That being said, cheap liners and lots of junk left in it, like dude took his tools and retired and just left it.
Dirty and greasy but no rust, just used in a shop for 30 yrs, at least it wasnt a body shop. Itll clean up good and im super happy to have a box built this will with 29 in deep drawers.

A clean KR-1000 sell for $2000.00 all the time here in California. I was a Snap-on dealer back in the 80's and 90's and that was always a great box and very sought after. $1500 seems very fair if it's in good shape. I kept one for myself for home

I'd rather have the KR1000 for the thicker metal and the drawer detents.

I like the drawer layout of the KRL1022 better, but thicker metal is more important.

i had a kr1000 from '95 thru '02, worked out of everyday, really liked it and built solid. That being said, turning wrenches everyday i would take the 1022. Got to have to deep top drawers for sockets. etc

What are you doing to a toolbox where a KRL 1022 is too thin? Why is this such an issue with you? Are you putting hundreds of pounds in one drawer? The slides will fail before the sheet metal does.


No. Thicker metal is not more important. Proper design is. Well laid out drawer geometry and slides will out perform a just thicker drawer. Obviously there is a lower limit, a cheap craftsman is TOO thin for the design to make up for it. But a Snap-on Master series is too thin? Seriously?

Also, a KR1000 doesn’t even HAVE drawer detents. I have 2 of the damn things, and if the floor isn’t level, the drawers drift open.

You probably have the original black detents that are worn out. If you switch to the grey detents, the drawers won't drift open anymore. They're easy to change on that box. Available from the online store.

Mr. B would you by any chance know the Snap-On item number for the drawer slides. I order the #8-05388-RMS but those slide are just a little tad bulkier and didn't fit. So if you can guide me to the right ones I would humbly appreciate it.
