So I am looking at buying this box which I am pretty sure is a mid 80's KR1000 Guy wanted $1600 got him down to $1100 without seeing it in person. Its quit a drive so wanted to do some negotiations before renting trailer and going to look at it. I thought the paint looked bad in a few spots but he says it is good just dusty. He is saying all drawers work ok has no key. Doing some searching on here at $1100 it is an ok deal but not great. What do you guys think. I could buy a like new Matco 4S for $1350. Just for home use but I do a lot or work at home on cars. Thanks

That box is a King among men in the world of boxes....search on here, it's a secret club!:lol_hitti

Seriously though, it is an awesome box! I scored mine for 700, but it's no beauty queen. No major damage I would go 1000 all day for a good KR1000.

KR also has deeper drawers than that Matco, you get real spoiled by them!

Yes they are nice toolboxes. There is also a "secret stash" under the top mat.As for your price It sounds good at $1100 but look it over when you get there.Just make sure there is no rust and you will be happy with that box.

Good luck

Thanks for the info on the key. I had bought a replacement lock in the past but did not realize someone on ebay was making replacement keys.

Hoping to get out of work early today and go take a look at this box in person if not tomorrow morning. Guy said he has a small side box he may through in. Has no drawers or shelves not even sure of the brand.

I would say if that size fits your space I would go for it. They are a very nice box, plus you can always find a top box if you run our of room.

I only have a two car garage and always working on something so space is a concern. But if I get it I am going to get rid of a wooden bench I have and put a wood top on this and use it as one of my benches.

Late last fall I saw one in good condition go for $850 at auction. With buyer's premium and sales tax that came out to just over $1000. I thought that was a good deal. You're right in the ball park at $1100.

So I rented a uhaul and headed out into the rain today. Even though the seller said it had not rust I was pretty sure it did. Just looked like it in the pictures. Well I get there and the buyer immediately apologizes because the box does have rust. Seemed like a nice guy said when he stored it at his sisters house years ago it looked in better shape. He did not take the picture for Cl his sister did. Well I looked it over and the bad is the bottom edge of the box has some light rust, the bottom left side drawer had some rust on it lower edge and the bottom front panels under the drawers has some pitting/rust. Not bad was hoping it was in better shape but way better than some others I have seen and owned. The usual scratches and small dings on the side and back. The side box he was throwing in was a no name piece of ****. He mentioned it was nothing great. I wanted to pay $800 he wanted the $1100 we agreed on because he was throwing in the side box and a tote full of junk tools. I then see another side cabinet in the corner of the messy garage and it is a small Snap On side cabinet. He did want to sell it. So at the end of it all I paid $1000 for the KR1000 and KR286B side cabinet and told him to keep the junk cabinet and the tote of junk. The side cabinet was in ok shape. The good about the box was that the drawer slides felt and looked great, and the drawers themselves were in great condition. So here are a few quick pics as I just pushed quickly into the garage tonight.

UHaul trailer with tailgate that folds down for a ramp. Could not get anyone to go with me and my 4x4 F150 would have been a bear to get the box into. The trailer cost $25.

You didn't hurt yourself at all. That's just a touch of surface rust, it's an old box and IMO one of the most awesome boxes ever. Looks great!!

You got a great deal, well done. I bought mine new and paid 5k for it in 89 and I wouldn't sell it for anything. I built a shelf for mine and the deep drawers are great.

So here a few pics from today. I spent the afternoon cleaning it. The pic of the drawer liners gives you a different perspective of how much storage space there is in a KR000. The other pic is after I cleaned it up an pushed it into its home. May not look much better but I spent a few hours cleaning the paint and trim.

It was not to greasy so I cleaned it with some watered down Simple Green. Then I used a Mothers rubbing compound its not a very aggressive compound. Then I used some old polish I had in the cabinet I think it was NU Finish. I am not one to normally spend the time polishing my tool boxes. But I like to give things a good cleaning once then just wipe them down every so often after that.

Original drawer slides should be Accuride. Contact Accuride to get all the replacement rubber/plastic, and felt pieces which WILL be damaged/missing.

When the Accuride drawer slides on my NAPA (Rebranded Waterloo Magnum Plus) box needed attention, Accuride send me a full set of rubber/plastic pieces at no charge. Downside is that they could not supply the replacement slides I wanted--just the rubber/plastic parts.

I won't promise that YOUR slides need the same pieces as my NAPA box needed...but it's likely.

It is NO fun to replace all the rubber/plastic, and felt pieces. But once you've done a few, it becomes a routine. Clean and lube all the slides at the same time.

I believe that Snappy has been supplying off-brand replacements for the original Accuride slides for many years now. No promises on how long those last, or whether you'll be able to get replacement parts. You'll want to do an "inventory" of the drawer slides; could be some have already been replaced. You may have all Accuride, or a mix of Accuride and the off-brand.

I bought one of these new back in 87 or 88. Also the matching top. Still have them. Tough as nails. Deep too. I think it might have been the largest box at the time. Don’t remember for sure but I think I paid somewhere around $4900 bucks for both but now that I think about it I had a couple of Craftsman boxes on trade in

Unfortunately they have switched from Accuride, at least the last set of old KR boxes I restored. I'm doing a KR290A right now and my guy is warranting ALL the slides instead of getting just the soft parts...I'm kind of one the fence about that one because they are all pretty good shape Accurides from 1990.......
I used to have his email, but Jorge from Accuride was the man for those soft parts!

I'm guessing they're all toast. I've replaced them before on other boxes. I have just about enough left over from last time I got some to do this box. It's pretty much impossible to buy a box this old and not have this issue, but no biggie. I think the slides are pretty decent. My plan is just to re-lube the slides and replace the detents.

I was wondering yesterday how much they cost new.

Yep, I corresponded with Jorge about six or seven years ago, still got his email. He helped me out with detents for a KR 650 at the time.
