Went and picked this up yesterday. Guy was asking 80 and I paid 70 for it. Did I do good? Personally I feel like it's a good deal. The other question I have is what is the best way to remove all the stickers without damaging the paint? Also can you order keys through snap on if you provide them with the lock numbers?

Then on the way home I saw this one on Offer Up for 40. I offered 20 and the guy took it. As I was leaving he threw in some vise grips for am extra 20. This one will take quite a bit of work. But the Vise Grips alone are worth more than 40.

I think the second one is going to need a TON of work but the 1st one looks like a good deal to me. You should be able to get the emblems off with a heat gun. The stickers probably a heat gun and a plastic razor blade. Then acetone for the left over glue.

And yes on the keys. I got some for my 1980's box from the SO truck.

snap on will send you to someone else for the keys. i forget who, they charge on the order of 10$ each for a key, plus shipping. they are generic keys, not marked snap-on. there are people on ebay who will sell you a set for about 9$.

as a side note, i bought the new fancy "tumbler" sets from snapon for a 1979 vintage KR550/555 set. even though they are meant for new boxes, they are drop in replacements for the locks in those boxes. i imagine yours are the same. they are about 25$, and ship for free. you can also order several locks keyed alike, if you intend to get a matching bottom (kr557) (and/or middle box, kr547).

the new snap-on locks are here:

here are catalog pages for the kr537D (largely the same box as yours):

Great buys. If the vise grip are all Peterson, they would sell easily for $90 in my store, $10 a piece for the fixed and $15 for the swivel pads. Have actually seen them go for more at auctions.

Nice pick ups, they would be good for bench top boxes. For the stickers, use a heat gun and a plastic razor blade,/scraper. The residue should come off with some wax and grease remover. I didn't bother with locks on my boxes, the price was not worth the added security(mine are in a home garage though).

2nd box may be good for parts to make one good functioning unit.

Disassemble and check your drawer slides. I'm sure out of the 2 boxes one or more is damaged. What you paid for the junky box is what a few snap on slides would be.
Nice find on the vice grips too!
Good luck and post some after pics!

I was able to get "Snap On" key directly from the truck. He did order them but they were free. Y16 mine were I believe. But that might not be the case with yours. It might depend on the age of the box or something.

Thanks. What I'm thinking is to use the second one as a junkyard box. Just pack it full of tools I would need for any trip to the junkyard.

Don't use anything sticky like grease or motor oil - it will make a mess. I would use any cheap, light-weight oil like ATF, air tool oil, WD-40, and so on ...

Yes, the $20 box is an ugly baby, but I'd still have had to bring it home. The vise grips are a huge bonus.

I bought one of those twenty years ago for $50 and sold it ten years ago for $150. It was in about the same shape as the first box pic just no stickers.

After the slides and box are cleaned and de-greased, go to the grocery store and hit up the canning section. There should be a product called canning wax. They just big square bars of paraffin wax. Take the wax bar and rub it vigorously on the drawer slides and that's it. Grease and oils will gum up, graphite doesn't do much either. The wax seems odd but it works.

No worries, you've got plenty of drawers to experiment with so no big deal. Just de-grease and try something if that doesn't work. I did all kind of stuff but settled on the wax. It's working for me, I moved my hand tools to my old Snap Ons, so I'm in and out of it regularly.
