Snap on KR560 value and questions

Hi everyone, I am starting a new job pretty soon wrenching on trash trucks and it will be my first job in a truck shop. I spent the past 5 years working summers and weekends (Im only 20 and in college now) at a marine diesel shop and we worked out of service trucks on the road full time so I never bought a real tool box.

I found this Snap on KR560 on marketplace today and the guy says its loaded with snap on so I am going to go look at it this weekend. He is a retired heavy truck tech so I am thinking this might be an awesome way to expand my tool selection without spending a fortune on the tool trucks.

I do have questions about the kr560 now though. If I need parts are they available still? Things like drawer slides, casters or a lock. Second is if anyone has ever painted one of these? I want to paint it extreme green to match my roll cart and powder coat the trim black. Is this a crazy though or is it not too bad to paint a box? Lastly how are things like the drawers and trim removed? Do they just slip apart or require tools.

I have a husky box to hold me over till this is restored too, I'd just rather get myself a quality old snap on box that I can take pride in knowing I restored it, then continue to support Harbor freight, kobalt, or husky again and have my money sent overseas.

Thanks for all the help in advance guys. I'll keep everyone updated on what I end up doing. I attached a picture of the box below for everyone to see.

Call Snap-On tomorrow morning and ask about availability of replacement slides. I hear the bottom drawer may be roller slides, so ask about that also. If the lock is damaged, ask about locks. Not too much to break otherwise. Snap-on is phasing out support for 80's vintage tool boxes. So you want to verify you can get parts if needed.

If it were me, unless it is a steal I would hold out for a box in better condition.

Im gonna try and get through to them next week after I get the part numbers. The guy is a retired ase master truck tech and he said it is loaded with snap on and mac tools up to 1 inch drive and 2 inches for $3000 so I am really interested in it mainly for the tools but dont want to just throw the box away

Just make sure the tools still have life in them. Some Snap-On tools can live forever in a professional environment, but lots wear out.

I created an account just to respond to this question. Is the shop you’re working out of affiliated with local government? Are they city garbage trucks or private? If it is for the city don’t buy that box and tools, read below. If it is private then Ignore me.

Monday morning call Snap-On industrial and ask to get your shop set up with them because you work for a local government shop. Get all the paperwork filled out and send it back. Why should you take all the time and jump through all the hoops? Tax free and no freight. Plus, You will get a discount through the industrial account. There are strict rules behind the use of the account but it’s worth the effort.

Not everything they make is worth what they are asking for it, but with all the benefits that go along with the account, it’s hard to beat.

Just an FYI but if that's a KR560 and not the KR660 it wont have ball bearing slides, it will have old school friction slides and if it's got a ton of heavy tools some drawers can be a bit stiff to close.

For $3.K I would be at that guy's doorstep ASAP.
Not for the box, but to see if it really is "full of Snap & Mac".
Flip the box for change if it is too much trouble to make easy to use.

To answer your questions:

1) Many parts are readily available from Snap On, primarily the slides and castors. As the other poster noted, if it's a 560 it's friction slides, with the largest drawer having ball bearing slides. The locks would be the old type, but you can put the newer locks in if you choose.

2) Nothing wrong with painting it, just know it's going to be a job. If you do paint it, do it because you plan on keeping the box awhile. If you think there's a chance you resell the box soon, don't bother.

3) It's easy to remove the drawers, you can do it with a special tool from Snap On, or a modified hacksaw blade.

^^^^This. I do this often. I will buy a box full of tools, keep what I want and then flip everything else. I just flipped a box for more than I paid for an entire lot and still have the tools to sell. A good way to keep money in the PayPal account for my habits.

The slides at least should still be available. My former co-worker has a similar looking Snap on bottom box with one lock per bank of drawers. The Snap on guy warrantied a set of slides for him a year or two ago.

Thank you for all the help everyone. The tools in the box are really worth the money. The box isnt bad at all but man the tools are really nice. Mostly snap on with some mac, a few matco pieces and as bit of old school craftsman. On top of all that, it was loaded with Starrett measuring tools like dial indicators, calipers, and micrometers. Guy was a master truck and equipment tech and spent most of his career rebuilding engines, transmissions, axles and gearboxes on equipment. Im gonna pick it up and decide wether or not I keep the box later.

Sounds like you're going to do quite well.

I think I would shy away from repainting the box. Clean it up, wax it and when the local Snap-on dealer stops by the shop, see what you can do for a trade in for the box you want.
