Snap on KR560 & Vulcan questions

Hi all,
Every search for information leads to this board so had to join up and I have a couple questions.

I recently inherited my fathers Snap On KR560 from '86 according to the back. I was going to add on some Matco side lockers I found CL on the cheap but when I went to look at my box, it doesn't have a lip to hang them off. Where the 560's not intended to be expanded on the sides? Can you only put a top chest on and that's it?

Also, I have his old (probably 40years old) Vulcan box and some vulcan swivel impact sockets that are a little rusted. I've fought rust in the past on stuff just by soaking in vinegar, any reason I shouldn't drop the sockets in some? They still swivel but seem a little stiff but it's an even stiffness almost like its by design and I'd hate to disintegrate what, if anything, is in the socket joint if it belongs there.

Thanks for any info! Love all the pic threads, some very impressive set ups on here.

does the box have the original "hardboard" masonite type cover on it?

i had to trim mine back a little to get side boxes to hang on the lip

Yes it does but the lip would have to be a good 3/4 to 1" wide to grab on. Maybe snap on lockers are wide enough but the Matcos I was going to buy had a small rolled over lip. They'd probably hang off my craftsman roller but not the Snappy.

Is that the case?

not my pic, my box is offsite and don't have any handy but this shows what I'm talking about. Hijacked from another thread here. The lips at the top are the same width as the aluminum trim pieces that run vertically. Honestly if that top wasn't recessed, there wouldnt be a lip at all.

I may do that just to see what info they can give. Thanks so much for your help!

Fabbing something up might work, bend up some thick steel to go under the insert, up and around the top and then have a lip to hang off...

I get what you are stepping in. I don't know the timeframe, but for a while, the top of the roll cabs was made in a way that it didn't have a lip as other boxes, but rather about an inch wide. I think there was a bracket of some sort for hnaging stuff on the side. The box pictured above shows this clearly.

You could always bolt the sides on. Just got this Mac and the locker is bolted on with no lip

As far as the impacts, I usually chuck them up in a cordless drill or impact gun, spray with WD 40 or any other type lube, and spin them while holding Scotchbrite around the socket. Quick, and imparts some oil into the socket for protection. For chrome, same but use 000 steel wool. Oh, after scotchbrite, spin in a clean rag.

I've read about people bolting boxes on but that just seems like it wouldn't be a sturdy has having the lip. compressive tension vs shearing the sides. Maybe some fender washers and do like 4 or 6 bolts and it'd be good? Not that I plan on storing cement in the side boxes but I do prefer to over engineer things whenever possible.

Thanks for the advise on the sockets, that's a good idea. The rust isn't deep at all just surface so that should do nicely.

The KR660 that I have has 2 slots in the top at each end for the side cabinet adaptor to drop into so it could hang on it. The adaptor probably came with the side box. I took photos but they won't load for some reason?

you would probably be fine using the handle mounting holes in the side.

if i recall, matco's lockers dont have a hanging lip on them, theres some kind of mounting bracket that attaches the locker to the roller cab with bolts.

SO may be the same.

the kr560 & 660 should be the same,

maybe, :headscrat possibly, :dunno: because those boxes already had a built in "side box" nothing was available at the time to add another side box.

the kr 550 single bank had a matching side box available at the time.

ya gotta remember, there was no such thing as a locker back in the 80's when these boxes were made.

the kr 560 was the 1st double bank box i ever remember seeing, late 80's early 90's before double bank boxes started showing up.
the kr 550/555 combo was called "big red" by a lot of people,

only thing bigger at the time was a SO taco cart.

How would you rate the box so far?
