Ready to pull the trigger on a used 'real' box. Snap on KRL-1003 for $2500 or the Matco 72", 17 drawer (don't know model number) for $2700. The Snappy has grimy slides and some chipping along some of the drawers, the Matco is in better cosmetic shape. Thoughts?

I would go with the Matco. I have never owned either snap on or Matco boxes. Only Mac but the drawer lay out on the Matco would be my preference although they are close.

After owning a 6S and then a KRL box I would take a Matco 6S over a KRL or even an Epiq. But that is a 5S or 4S. The Snap On is probably a little better built but the Matco looks better

snap on Lifetime warranty meaning you can get parts

Matco not lifetime warranty once that box is 5 years ld and you need slides you will have to modify box to make new ones work

also Id take 2k in cash and waive it under each sellers nose one will bite

Almost word for word what I was going to post. Also if the time ever comes to get rid of it, the Snap-On will continue to be worth more.

Yeah. Right or wrong people will generally pay more for an SO box and it would sell faster.

While neither are a bad box, you are comparing a low end Matco to a for its day, the top of the line SO. Not saying the Matco box is bad, but it is marketed as a beginner's box. Also the Matco is 24" deep compared to 29" for the SO. The Matco is definitely newer, the SO is easily 20 years old. As long as the SO box is in good shape, I'd take that one.

If that box was a 6s you would have bought it already. They are damn nice boxes and underrated by many. Same with Mac Macsimizers and the Cornwell boxes. Between those 2 particular boxes the Snap on hands down.

Go with the snap on when you decide to upgrade it will be worth more

And the snap on will hold up better over time and that year Krl actually has thicker gauge steel than current Krl does

Same specs as current epiq grade

You will have to look at a snap on catalog atleast 5 years old to see the specs newer Krl have thinner gauge steel

Hmm I was going to give them a soak with ATF or something and then lube them with wax or Houdini lubricant. Is that not going to work?

I have a matco 9535 and I would never buy another matco box. I have had the box for 5 or 6 years. and I cant tell you how many times I had to replace the lock cylinders. I know I replace 3 this year already. My matco dealer says I am the only one with this problem. I think He is full of ****

Yikes thats pretty terrible. You wouldn't think that would be such a wear item. Even locking it a couple times a day, I would think you'd only need to replace them every few years.

You're not going to get them off the box without the tool. I've got the tool and the experience using it. Let me know when you need the info.

I'll make a note of this- thanks for your offer. I'm hoping having the drawers out will be enough to get everything clean and rolling better. I guess I can always find a truck man and pester him for new slides if they're not salvageable.

Re: Snap-on KRL-1003 vs Matco 72"

I may have quite a few slides for that box if you're interested. As for cleaning, I would take them out, unless they are pretty clean already, degrease them (a parts cleaner would be best), and lubricate them with an oil that doesn't attract dust easily. Definitely not any ATF. Maybe Tri Flow? I used Hammond organ oil on mine, but it's kind of hard to get ahold of.

I was thinking homemade Kroil (thus the ATF). Houdini is pretty great- doesn't gum up and stays put. We'll see once the box is home and assessed. Thanks!

The box I have now is a KRL1023 its my second Snap-on box and I work out of it every day. On the rare occasion I have an issue with it I just let them know and its take care of. My box is seven years old now and I've only had to replace one set of drawer slides and one of the caster wheels (the finish was coming off the wheel). My father in law has a 20 something year old KRL 761 with hard to open drawers due to the slides and Snap-on replaced all the slides in that box and that box he bought at a pawn shop for $800 some years back. I have no complaints on my box and Snap-on has the best looking boxes out there. I've never owned a Matco box but some of the guys in the shop have them and from what I understand only the original owner can get their warranty, I could be wrong though. In reality the box is just going to sit there and hold tools and with some guys random garbage, so its really up to preference.

Snapon will replaces slides no questions asked. If you call the company, they need to know that you do not receive service from a snapon truck (IE home box) they are supposed to send you new slides to replace your broken ones without asking for the old ones back. I had a number of slides go out on a box that I have and they shipped them out to me in Hawaii... If they don't honor this then the representative probably doesn't know about the rule. Call again and look for a different rep.

I combined good parts of the old slides to put double slides on a lot of my drawers. I had to take each one apart and clean them with throttle body cleaner (doesn't evaporate too quick) and then used bearing grease. The grease that Snapon uses is like bearing grease but way thicker. I didn't know where to get any. I had a slide that hadn't gone out yet and they decided they wanted to replace that one too just to be on the safe side.

I have a hard time sucking up the cost for their tools but their attitude towards snapon branded toolboxes is that they have to work 100%.

Thanks! That attitude certainly inspires a lot of confidence. I'm starting to get really excited, despite so much money going into one 'tool'!

No problem. For me, I just want a tool box. One solid color without all of the fancy stuff. I don't need the graphics and metallic surfaces. That's why I often look around to find an older box like the one you posted.

I want to be able to put a scratch in it and say "oh well".

I don't know what the other slides are like but I just used my flathead as a wedge on the bottom of the slide and tapped the slide upward with a hammer. Comes right off.

this one appears to be a little different:

The slides in that video are regular bayonet slides, not the kind with the claw. I don't know why he was using that little pry bar because it's not necessary with those type slides.

Do you rent that tool out? I haven't seen what it goes for, but seems necessary only on occasion.

No pictures as of yet, although I'm seriously thinking about taking some. I need to clean a few slides on my box and taking a few pictures won't kill me.

That'd be great- haven't seen anyone with a write up online showing how it's done.
