I'm new to this forum but thought maybe someone might have had the same problem as me so may be able to give me some advice.

My krl series tool box is about 8 years old now and although that doesn't seem like a longtime the tool box itself tells a different story. When I first purchased it it sat in storage in a dry secure out building for about 18 months until I decided to take it to work, once I got it there I removed the cardboard and took it off the pallet and it stayed in the same place for 3/4 years where is was my pride a joy, I moved garage so out the box in my parents home for about 6 months and then took it to my new once of work, once I got it there and inspected it to my surprise it was covered in rust, all the welded seems we're rusty there were blisters of rust on the lid of the box and there were crows feet and signs of rust pretty much all over the box. That was about 18 months ago and after speaking with my snap on rep he advised me to let his area manager look at it to see if there was anythin that could be done about my £4k tool box.

Once the guy had looked at it for about 2 minutes he basically shook his head and informed me that paint work wasn't covered under warranty and as such the tool box was my problem. He said once I'd finished paying for it there may be something they could do e.g trade in for a bigger new box. Having finished paying for the box a couple of weeks ago he came back out informed me that the box looked like it had been stood in a damp environment (pretty much any workshop in the uk) and as such there was nothing he could do or would do to help, I asked about a possible trade In to which he replied what would we want with a rusty tool box.

As you can imagine I'm not entirely happy with the answers I got and at the very least I was expecting some sort of help refurbishing the box but got nothing at all.

Has anyone had a similar experience with snap on tool boxes or snap on after sales, or does anyone have any advice as to what my options or rights are with regards to the damage.

Sorry for the long post and sorry if I'm in the wrong place but I could really do with a bit of help.

Thanks in advance

That's the quality of snap on boxes.

I have first hand experience of this, twice now !

My first box was a 40" KRA series box. I had it for months then removed the bottom drawer one day to remove some jammed papers.

The whole bottom of it (inside) was covered in rust. When i removed all the drawers i found rust up the sides and back of it. It wasn't even 6 months old.

They powder coat them at the factory but don't consider the inside to be as important. They are hung at two points for the coating process and the same spots on every single KRA i have checked are completely bare metal and covered in rust.

I got a credit for this toolbox from my dealer and his manager, the manager told me it was a one off.

I recently bought another box and surprise surprise the inside of it is covered in rust. The interior has the thinnest coat of paint you will see anywhere on earth.

It's totally ****, has completely put me off ever buying a Snap on box ever again.

With regards to your dealers comments, simply point out that if the toolbox had been correctly painted when made, even if in a damp environment it wouldn't be rusty. Only due to bare metal it has rusted which is a direct cause of **** manufacturing.

I emailed snap on customers services and they literally couldn't have cared less.

snap on had huge Paint problems on the KRL in the 2003 ish era, snap on just bought back a KRL7023 that was having pain adhesion problems

I don't think I bought it as early as 2003 I'm thinking 2007 maybe 2006 at the earliest. Even by my inexperienced eye tho it certainly looks like there is adhesion problems, it looks like paint had just been applied to bare metal with out any primer!

Ive emailed customer services and they said they would look into it if I could find the details of the manager who came to see the box when I first complained. I took a bottom drawer out over the week and your right, all the inside at the back looks like bare metal, the paint must of been like water, also the spot welds that fix the inner skin to the bottom of the box have come undone so the bix feels a bit flimsy, also the bottom lip of the box it covered in putting and rust. I literally said exactly the same as you that if the box was painted properly at the factory them it shouldn't go rusty but the manager didn't want to know.

Feel abit sorry for my dealer cause he's a really nice guy who sort of understands the predicament I'm in but I get the feeling his hands are tied on the matter.

One thing you will learn fast is that Snap on UK customer service is diabolical. No matter what i email asking about the answer is "refer to your dealer" - well no **** Sherlock but sometimes the dealer doesn't have all the info/answers.

You need to be firm with the manager, it is a manufacturing error no matter how they try to pin it.

Sorry to hear of your problems. The KRL line used to be the best in the industry. I have two that were made in the early 90's They look brand new still. Contact Snap On corporate and see what can be done, I've always had good experiences when dealing with them.

I wouldn't buy anymore from your current dealer until they help you out or get you in touch with the right folks at corporate. You paid a premium with the expectation of quality and service.

Ermmm they should probably warranty that. I can understand if you left the thing outside in the elements, or used it in a shop literally right next to the ocean, but not if it was taken care of. I bought a KRA-2411 box new back in 2007, and have had zero rust issues with it.

Stop buying ****, and withhold payments until the issue is fixed. That's how you have to be to get ****** dealers to do anything for you. Hit him right in the wallet. You have to be an ******* sometimes.

Put those weekly payments in a savings account at your local bank, so you can pay him in full when he eventually makes things right.

It was sat in my parents garage for about 6 months covered in a patio cover like a tarpaulin and the dealer said that's probably why it's gone like it has, apparently condensation gathers on the inside of the cover. I've paid less for my car which stays outside 365 days a year in hail rain sun and snow and hasn't a spot of rust on it!

Yes, I realise you are in the UK. I suppose you have called this number? 01536 413800 Snap On shows this as United Kingdom Head Office & Distribution Center in Northants, Kettering, England. You could always try in the US Kenosha, Wisconson (262)656-5119 preceded of course by the appropriate dialing code for the USA. They will probably refer you back to the UK number above though. Maybe they can apply some heat to them. Found them on Google. Here, pay them a visit if necessary.

Best way in my opinion is tapatalk on a phone or tablet. Don't need any other outside accounts other than your GJ login.
