Is $4k a fair price for a KRL1023 Blue with stainless top? Used but in mint condition, includes cover from original owner. He said he bought it in 07/08.

Edit: uploaded a couple pics on second page.

IMHO, yes!!

However opinions vary all over the place and used box pricing tends to be regional.

Yes, I would pay that if in the market. Of course I'd try to haggle, but if it not, I wouldn't walk away.

That KRL1023 may look big and impressive as it sits there, but wait until you have the drawers out someday. The inside wall that the drawer slides mount to are made out of 18 ga. steel. I had the drawers out of my KRL box one day to clean the slides and just for shits and giggles - stuck a 12'' 4R steel ruler in one of the slide mounting slots to measure the steel thickness. It was most definitely less than 1/16''. The next day, an email to Snap On customer service confirmed that they use 18 ga. steel for the inside wall. That is thinner than the ruler I used to measure it with.

1/16'' = 0.0625 (ruler thickness)
18 ga. = 0.0478
3/64'' = 0.0469
1/32'' = 0.0312

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am out of room in my Montezuma 56" which has been great, but I don't want another chinese box if I can help it. I will probably sell that box or give it to my dad.

That's great and all, but the box can hold in impressive amount of weight and never will fail, so whoopy do!

It'll definitely fail if you try to remove the drawer slides and don't know exactly where to stick the prybar. That prybar being the Snap On drawer slide tool SPP837. That 18 ga. steel bends very easily.

The one time I needed to remove a set of slides, they popped out by hand, no prying needed. Other then that, at what point should I expect my 11 year 1022 to collapse under all the weight its holding?

That would mean you have the easy slides without the claw up front.

Your 1022 won't collapse under weight because that weight is spread out over a large area, but if you stick two of your fingers into the slide mount slot and pull hard enough, you'll see the metal flex. Granted they have Z channels spot welded between the outer and inner wall which gives the box some strength, but if those Z channels weren't there, you could literally yank the inside wall out with your bare hands.

Exactly, so why are we worried about the gauge of metal, proper design insures it works.

Because of the amount of money they're charging for the box. For that amount of money, there should be no 18 ga. steel on the box anywhere. My opinion of course.

It's difficult for people to understand that proper design and the use of gussets, stiffeners and properly placed welds keep the weight of the box down so it doesn't hog up load capacity for the tools it needs carry. Also if they build them too heavy then you'd need a crane to move them, they're damn heavy enough without tools!

But what do I know, I've been working out of a well loaded KRL box for almost two decades.........yup, looks like a ************* to me.

Well, looks like a done deal. Seller will be delivering it tomorrow! Seller has a trailer which makes loading/unloading much easier than my borrowing a truck and figuring out how not to damage the box in the process.

$4k is roughly one third of full retail new so I'd say it's a great deal if in minty condition for a very high quality box. You'll love it. They get smoother and smoother the heavier you load them.

That box looks absolutely cherry. You done good at $4k. Most people around here with a 1023 want $7-10k.

Already put a coat of wax on it and transferred tools over!

I now have to put my Montezuma 56" on craigslist and see if I can sell that.
