I just aquired a 1/2 drive Snap-on L-710. Could someone give me an idea of age and approximate value?

Thanks

There should be a date code between the ON/OFF near the lever and then look up the code on this chart to see the year of manufacture: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14884
I had one of those once and believe it or not there was actually a hairline fracture on the head near the gear area; yours looks like it is in mint condition! I was given a later model as a replacement at a Snap-On distribution center no questions asked! There is something unique about the finish on those ratchet that I like; sort of a "silver" chrome and a somewhat understated elegance to them and they have the "three" lines in the middle! I think that is unique to that era; I don't remember seeing that on the other models... it is a very uncluttered and clean design, much less sharp edges; easy on they eyes....:)

Hey guys thanks for the info. I took a look at the chart(really cool) and it is a 1954. I found it in a tool box that was left in a trailer I recently purchased. I was thinking of putting it up on ebay as I already have 3 1/2 snapons but for $30 -$40 I 'm gonna keep it.

Thanks again

The late 40's and early 50's 1/2 drive stuff is not very valuable, not sure why though. Just a lack of interest I guess.

If it was the long version or a flexhead it would be worth more.

L-715 is the long version, and they do come up. The 71-15 is the earlier version, with the smooth handle (like on an F-70n/m ratchet), and they also go for $30-50. Id expect a similar amount for an L-715.

There is no flex head version of this ratchet.

I'm not talking "vintage" I'm saying what would net more money.

oh, most definitely. Flex head snap on's are always worth a lot more than standard head.

I wonder when the first flex head snap on's came out. The earliest I have ever seen was a late 60's flex round head 3/8 long handle.

F70N's probably had the most comfortable handle Snap=on ever produced.

I like the older models a lot better then the 70' trough 90's styles. It's just a personal feel thing.
Of course the run of failures I had in the early 80's probably didn't help any either.

It was still live when I saw it but over before my bid went in.

Was there a long 3/8''s with that style handle? All of mine from that period are about 7 inches long.

Edit: The same seller has a M-3 T handle in 9/32's if any one needs/ wants one.

That is a 40's era one.

2 extended handle F-70n's have shown up. Both get fatter at one point in the handle, suggesting that they were lengthened versions of a standard F-70n, however both came from different sources, and both measured the exact same length. This may have been a factory modification, but they are not manufactured that way, and never in a catalog.

Thanks Chad I didn't think I'd ever seen one. That explains why. Too bad I love that handle shape.

Whats up with the "rubber ducky" sheathed handle; was that from the factory or a aftermarket add on? An early attempt at a "comfort handle"?
