at one time I spoke with the industrial rep about this setup.
it uses a camera that identifies the tools by shape and tracks the in and out

but that is not what i am asking about. see pics. i guess all it does is use a card reader to unlock/lock the box. seems it is only good for shops where there are "sticky fingers" all around.

It's worthwhile in industrial facilities where there isn't an active tool crib attendant, thousands of employees and contractors, and specialized tools that are thousands to ten's of thousands a piece.

For a basic hand tools in a garage... yes, it's likely overkill.

Aircraft repair where if a tool is missing, the aircraft stays put. Cheap compared to lost time on an aircraft or leaving a tool in a passenger jet engine...

I saw this at the plant when they were designing it. They basically used off the shelf imaging cameras from the aligners to do it.
