I'm looking to take apart my M-70 to clean out some grit I can hear in the innards. Anyone know how it comes apart. I got the screws out which seems to be a feat in itself. I just need to figure out how the drive comes apart

If you are talking about this

the bottom plate is just probably crudded up. The screws are all that hold the plate in. Try gently tapping on the drive gear from the selector switch side. If it doesn't come out readily try soaking in ATF, Kroil, PB Blaster or similar for a while and then try again.

Try threading the screws in from the drive side to act as a "handle" of sorts. Thread the screws in 3 or 4 turns to engage all the threads in the cover, and then wiggle the screw back and forth. The cover should pop off.

1. Wrap your hand around the ratchet with your thumb and middle finger grasping the cover plate.

2. Lock vice-grip pliers on the square drive and pull.

I might leave it together for now. It tells more of a story that way. I was thinking about cleaning it up, but, maybe just the inside sometime. Thanks for the replies.

Do it the way I told you, it's not near as violent as it sounds ... I've done it that way hundreds of times.

I lay the top of the head over my vice jaws with a rag over them (dont clamp the ratchet head in the jaws), and use a short length of brass stock and a ball pien hammer to tap on the back end of the drive gear. It pops it right open,

On the older version of this ratchet, and early 30's snap on ratchets, there are no screws, just a press fit back plate. The above method is how you open it. The rag over the vice jaws protects the ratchet, and collects the inner parts that fall out.
