So I am a cash paying customer for snap on, I go on his truck, grab what I want and pay him in full right then and there, when I make a purchase he has always given me a cash discount, I never even asked for it he just gave it to me and I thought we had a mutual understanding that cash is king and it gives a little wiggle room. So my most recent and largest ever purchase from him, he had to order the items and charged me full price, so I didn't say anything and let it go but it's rubbing on me a little, now don't get me wrong I don't think the guy owes me anything but doesn't that seems a little strange? I thought tool trucks really appreciate cash paying customers, had I known he was going to whack me I would have made payments on it, thoughts?

Before I started buying snap on tools I talked to the driver about discounts for cash. At first he didnt act like he wanted to do much until I gave him a long list and pulled out the cash. Never had a problem since then.

Since the deal is done, I don't think you have much room to go back now and ask for a discount. I'm not bashing you, because we've all done things like that and later wished we would have handled them differently.

This could be a learning experience to help you to remember to ask about it before your purchase in the future.

Yea I wouldn't go back and ask anyway, like I said I don't feel the guys owes me anything, but that goes two ways, we'll see what happens next time.

From what I understand they keep a stock of the most popular items and order in bulk and can pass the savings on to you. But when you order out the catalogue or something specialty you usually pay full retail. It's good to jump on one once a week to see the specials. When I need something I usually wait for it to come up on special.

But with my matco guy, he's a snake. He will take your money but won't warranty a thing and back burner you once he has leveraged all he can out of you. **** him. I will only buy from my snap on guy.

When I sold tools (Matco) there were no quantity discounts, although there were sale items that we stocked up on. One of my friends had been a Snap-on dealer before Matco and they were the same.
Regarding your experience with your Matco dealer, it happens with all four trucks.

BTW, when a dealer warranties a tool and returns it for credit, he pays the return shipping, and the cost of that tool comes off of his purchase average.

I would imagine it's something to do with "in stock" vs needs to be ordered. He can probably afford discounts on stuff that he normally stocks.

Tell us just what kind of volume you dealt with. When I worked as a millwright, purchasing agents got some rather attractive volume discounts from Snap On and SK when they placed $250,000-$500,000 orders. Many of those orders exedeeded $1M on plant outages.
Often times, a bunch of us teamed together and got deals on tools for personal use far below retail. Way better than any truck guy could offer.

Fellas, you are missing an important point here. They don't really want you to pay cash. They make their nut on either company or truck interest. I know this for a fact. My best friend owns his own SO truck.

I have to disagree, every tool truck U have ever dealt with has always preferred cash.

There isn't interest in my truck account.

My dealer gives me a pretty decent discount on items on his truck but on special orders it's typically retail or dam near it. He had told me that he gets deals through out the year and thats where most of his stock tools come from he just doesn't have the wiggle room on orders could be bs but it sounds good I guess.

And yeah he has got to me I ordered some 1/4" sockets to fill out my tray and paid dearly.

If it was an ordered tool, he may not have had as much profit in it. And any discount he gives, comes off his profit. If he orders tools on a deal, easier to pass on the savings.

If he's always taken care of you in the past, I would assume if he could have, he would have.

I've never seen interest on a truck account and my past 2 dealers didn't care if you did cash or truck account it was same price but the more you buy the more you save. That being said if I bought something all the time as I usually did instead once in a while he would gave me a deal wether I paid in full or not. He makes his money on the repeat sales.

I've tried to deal with the snap on guy here but if it lists for $50.21 I can wave a $50 bill in his face and he asks for the rest.

Cash saves them the transaction fee which is 3-5% and would be there regardless of whether its special ordered or not. The understanding of paying cash and having them pass that discount back to you would have to be there though.

Straight markup on Snap-On is pretty crappy without a special/deal. Often its less than 20%.

It will all work out in the end. If it would make you feel better just warranty a ratchet that you bought for $5 for a dual 80.

You're disappointed because he didn't give you a discount after the order was placed? In the future ask up front about cost when you place the order... don't be shy about asking...ask him something like what's this going to cost me? No disrespect intended.. but he didn't "get" you...

My best Snap-On guy, would charge me full price on special order items. It was the only time I payed full price. He did not want me to pay cash, he wanted me to pay credit. He preferred me to swipe my card, because it would save him a fee, instead of charging the card without the physical swipe, that's how credit card processors are, as that process is considered a higher risk. I would get all kinds of deals, and free stuff. He would call me or text me about buy one get one deals. He asked for a list of what I wanted, I had a good sized list, and he would try to get me the best deals. He is a real cool guy. I paid no interest, and often had a little balance, but would pay off in nice chunks, or pay at least 50 to 75 depending what we agreed upon. I could have paid 10 or a hundred, I don't think he would care as long as I paid something,I would joke with him sometimes, and he would have been fine taking the 10.
I had many good deals from my guy. I usually got about 20% off sometimes more sometimes less. Depending on the item. I got to know the cost of things, and he still did fine with the discounts he gave, including the free stuff. I liked the service. Good guy. I was honest with him and let him know I was looking for deals, and many deals were made.

Not saying that this is the case across the board but I bought a tool from my snap on dealer and asked him to have it shipped to my house as I needed it for a side job and didn't want to wait till next week. The invoice in the box showed the cost to my dealer and the price I paid was double the dealer cost

Was this the first time you had to special order ? Shipping on that stuff for a single order is stiff. If the other things you bought were on the truck the shipping costs are spread out. The guys in business to make money and most do some kind of cash discount just to keep expense cash flowing.

Every truck I used had zero interest on truck accounts. Tool boxes are financed through the company, so the driver isn't getting that interest. And my drivers preferred cash and would discount if paying with cash.

Buying direct is a whole 'nother area. I don't know any tool truck dealer who could afford those volumes. Our payment terms weren't that generous.

I just met/got a new snap on guy today had to drive 30 min to meet him, at gas station and he's awsone. I traded him a shl80 15" 1/2 ratchet for a pink hard handle 1/4 ratchet, a Mac gearless 1/4 soft grip like new, a Mac 1/4 flex like new, a 1/2 long handle cornwell, and a pink goodie for wife. Also traded new black ratcheting screwdriver for a pink one and bought a used 24" hard handle pry bar and Mac needle nose for $20 and bought a blue point magnetic pick up tool for retail cash because I wanted to but got a free big *** snap on decal and a pocket screwdriver for free. Hes cool he drag races and wants a sponsorship with my wife's grandpa's company and to sell some of his products on his truck (Lucas oil) I think he was just trying to win me and my wife over to get a foot in the door and well it worked, gonna hook him up and buy from him from now on and build a good relationship with him and get good deals. I can provide him products as I get them free for life by the case so I can do some trading or for discounts. I'm one lucky guy now and my wifes uncle races top fuel in nhra and my snap on guy is, aspiring to be a pro and I can get free race tickets VIP ones and offered to take him so it sounds like me and him are gonna help each other out. He said hisprior job was being a security guard for WWE wrestling lol.

My driver prefers cash too. No processing fees, no one to ever chase after for a dollar, and no waiting to get his money. Sometimes I have to use a card because I plan to buy one thing and then see one or two more on the truck I cant live without. :lol_hitti

You should have simply asked him about the cash discount.
Get right to the point

Yea I know shipping isn't free and that was taken into consideration, the reason I didn't ask about the price is because he always tells me list price then when it's time to pay he gives me the real price, not a big deal I guess, it just rubbed me a little, especially considering I have bought something every time he comes for the last 3 weeks and this was my biggest purchase from him yet, but next time I'm definitely going to make my intentions Crystal clear.

Every tool I buy I ask how much it is. I am told the price. My tool guys have told me that their majority of money comes from collections on the street. Each has told me that they have several customers who don't pay the amount they originally say a lot of times because they are "short" that week, etc I deal with Mac and snap-on. I pay each $20/week. I usually carry a balance of 100-300 to each. There is no problem with either one of them to float me $500-700 for my same $20/week payment. Why is this? Because never ever ever have I said "sorry man I can't pay this week, I'm short" if I am on vacation or he is off for some reason that $20 gets tucked away and the next week I see him he gets $40. I am the only mechanic at my location and I have been here since 1997 they KNOW I'm gonna pay and pay every week. This alone gives me a break on prices and I have no problem getting anything warrantied.
