I recently picked up a really nice complete 36 piece set at a yard sale for little money. All of the sockets are in beautiful condition however 8-10 of the bits themselves have seen better days either rounded off or some degree of pitting. I'd like to replace these bits to make the set like new again. Does anyone have any experience with replacement bits comparing the standard black ones that came with the set verses the gold ones that are also available? Also, since I have never dealt with Snap On warranty issues does the warranty only cover the original purchaser?

My Snap-on Torx bit sockets have gray bits, but the hex bit sockets have black bits. I never saw the need for the gold bits.

The warranty is supposed to cover the original purchaser, but if you become a new purchaser at a dealer, he might overlook that.

You can take a regular allen wrench cut it and insert into the socket. Why abuse the warranty, just buy the bits you want and be happy with the set.

You're not abusing the warranty if you put some grease in the bearing.

You're not abusing the warranty if you put some butter on the muffin.

Get it?

Snap On metric hex bit sockets all have gold bits for at least a couple years, if not more. They don't make heavy duty removal hex bits like they do the Torx bits, which are also colored gold.

OK that makes sense since I don't have any metric hex bit sockets. Thanks for jogging my memory.

Find something on the truck you want to pay for at full price or in the sales catalog and the rep will very likely replace the broken tools no question. They will need to be broken or very rounded/worn for them to replace them though. I would't feel right/confident in asking them to replace something that is "pitted".

Yeah if they are rounded to the point that you feel it would slip inside of a bolt, then that is by no means abusing the warranty. It's not like you bought the set and are trying to warranty 20 of the 36 sockets. As mentioned just find something you could use, doesn't have to be anything crazy, maybe a set of screwdrivers or something comparable in value. Just research what snap ons gems are and pick something you like and I can't imagine a dealer having any issue warrantying them. I'd leave out the fact that you bought them used though.

Another thought is to buy the inserts you need, they aren't all that expensive and S-O has free shipping. I replaced a small one recently and it was around $4 IIRC. I could have warrantied it but didn't want to deal with it.

My snap on guy pushed a Irwin set on me and said when I break one upgrade to the SO ones for warranty. In two years I have upgraded 3 bits.

Email snap on. They will send you an email warranty form. Fill out your info and a list of the specific part numbers. Take photos of the bits and attach to the email once completed. In a few days you will have new ones on your doorstep.

Just wanted to let everyone know the outcome. I emailed SO as MattVette89 suggested and asked for a warranty form. They responded within the hour with an email asking for some information on the items in question. I took VinceG's advice and stated that they were a gift while providing the required information. Result - In a span of less than two hours on a Friday evening (9pm no less), i have a confirmation email from Snap On with a case ID number and they are sending out all of the requested parts at no cost. All i can say is wow what a company!

That's great to know I have been rounding out and replacing my Cman stuff with SO and was a little worried about spending that much $ and possibly having warranty issues. I have been buying a bunch of SO from eBay in new to excellent condition. I have been hearing some non professional's that don't have a tool truck coming to them having issues without a reciept. Just saying that they were a gift was enough for them to say that you weren't the original owner and the warranty doesn't apply.

Just bought these torx bits today after reading this thread.

Was feeling kinda bummed I didn't get the gold ones but I wanted the 12pc set.
