snap on mg25 locking up

my mg725 is having some problems. i figured id ask here before i go to my snap on guy.

i was torquing down wheels today at work and when it got to a certain part it would just make a hissing noise and stop putting out power almost like its locking up. i feel like its from people using it off my cart and not oiling it but im honestly not sure. can anyone give me any ideas?

you checked the forward / reverse button to make sure its fully engaged? sometimes you can hit it and the tool will be inbetween forward and reverse and have the same symptom your describing.

thats what i thought at first but i moved it back and forth a couple times, worked, then stopped working again. i did find out that someone oiled it. could over oiling cause it? if so how would i fix that?

If you use too much it could, but it would be blowing oil out everywhere. I know there was a certain type of marvel oil that would destroy the seals, but it was rare.

My MG just did the same thing and in my case it was a broken hammer. Sent it off to SO 130 dollars later it works like new again. Still had more power with a broken hammer then a mid level CP. Working on heavy construction equipment it gets a work out. My IR/Mac only lasted 9 months in the same environment. Oh well will not go back to a low power impact.

Your problem is you should have bought IR 2135Timax and you wouldn't be sending it off for repairs so often.

it very well could be a broken hammer. apparently someome at my shop was trying to remove a lugnut, it started making the noise, they dumped oil into it, and then ended up using a4 foot prybar to get them off. needless to say they will be paying for it and ill be locking up my tools

Well my MG 725 had a life cycle in years and not months like my 2135 ti/ AW5500. I will say it was very light and compact nice wrench to use. And I will say the SO XT7100 was a poor design but still had a longer life cycle then my IR/Mac. Still have not heard or found one that will have high output and long life cycle.

I recently filled out a survey for Decipher and SO looking at expanding there 1/2 impact line. It was pretty interesting they had computer sketches and specs for about every conceivable combination of air wrench from lightweight, compact size, power, etc etc. In the end I voted for the "Brute" roughly the same size as the MG725 but heavier and a little increase in power. Plus I got a 50 dollar Amazon gift certificate for my time.

Same here was pulling skid plates off a Cat dozer and it made a funny noise. Still worked just would lock up once in a while. This is where buying of a truck is nice my rep came over gave me another MG to use well it was in the shop.

The worst part of it breaking is hearing everyones stupid comments. The other mechanic ran his mouth off he now longer gets to use it. He can go drag the 1" impact out since you do not need an expensive impact wrench in his eyes.

My MG325 did the same thing last week. I tore it apart since it's out of warranty (3yrs old). I found something smeared against the barrel that the motor vanes sit in. It cleaned off easy enough and now it works fine. I don't know what the stuff was or how it got there. They are super simple to take apart, if it's out of warranty have a look yourself, if not get a loaner while they repair yours.

If it only lasted months then it must have been defective. They have a 2 year warranty, did you get it repaired?

You have a Broken Hammer pin.All my So Impacts have this problem.So I switched over to IR and have not been happier.

It lasted 9 months and broke a hammer. It was rebuilt under warranty and traded in for a XT7100. It might have been defective but a few guys at the Komatsu dealer also had premature failure with their Mac/IR also. I think that was seven years ago so maybe they have addressed some the isssues.

mines still under warranty and my so guy stops by my shop tomorrow. i have been using my 3/8" and an ir 1/2 thats is hella loud but gets the job done

I had to stop selling ir tools because of the extremely high failure rate. Their die grinders die within 8-10 weeks.
