A buddy of mine gave me a snap on MT-215 timing light. In pretty good shape however the protective boot for the alligater clip for the plug wire is mising. Can I get a replacement? Can I use it as is? Does anybody know when this thing was made?

Parts don't seem to be listed for the boots/plugs, etc. I have a feeling that these were made by Sun but I don't know for sure.

Parts listed that are available.

Here is a buy it now for $10; buy that (has the parts that are missing) and come out with with one working unit! Has good pics of the missing clamp too; you could probably fabricate one out of a standard alligator clip from radio shack or auto parts store.

Check it out here:

Can I use it as is without damaging the plug wire? Could I get by with rapping it with a little electric tape? This thing is old, I didn't realize how old it was. I found it in the 1961 catolog.

I would use maybe a double layer of heat shrink, or just find a boot that fits and redo the wire on the clamp, likely in bad shape at the connection anyway.

Condensed version operating instructions:
When the battery leads are not marked for polarity there is a diode bridge that always applies the correct polarity to the circuits in the light. So the battery leads can be hooked up to the battery posts without regard to positive or negative. Clip the pickup on the number 1 cylinder plug wire. Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose. Start the engine and point the light at the timing marks.

Thank you very much for your reply. I got it hooked up and it doesn't work. This was my grandfathers. Bought it new from snap on. I'd like to get it warrantied but I doubt they can fix it. I don't even know if they will warranty it.

I misread this at first.

The little clamp thing you're looking for sometimes appears as a spring. Here is a link where guys make their own from an existing Ford part or they sell similar springs at hardware stores. I'm not sure how you tested the gun without the spring. Did you just unplug the #1 wire and clip it to the wire-side contact?

And if it doesn't work, Snap-on won't warranty it unfortunately.
