I bought a red brick from snap on truck today. I got it for a song. Its updated to 99, I wouldnt mind getting more current cartridges. I see global cartridges on ebay up to 09 can adapter. Im looking to read codes and be able to do live data for abs on cars ip to 03 or so. Will this do it for me? Im not that concerned about troubleshooter. Also what other capabilities will this give me? Thank you

Ps i know the mt2500 is no longer supported as of spring of 09. Im just looking for a reasonably capabcanner for early 2000s vehicles.

I have one up to 2002 without the CAN1 cable and its fairly capable for cars before that date. Its particularly good on older Fords/Vauxhall Opel/VW group cars.

It will do codes/data/bi directional tests/adaptions and a whole lot more on the VAG expert setting.

I have more modern equipment for networked vehicles so I have not updated it and use purely as a "retro" scan tool for older cars.

I have the same scanner, recently i purchase a global obd2/eobd 96-2012 (mt2500-5500) cartridge for 100 dollars shipped off ebay. i used it on my 06 subaru the other day with just the obd2 with the k2 key. from what i can understand it does work with CAN protocol with the appropriate adapters. attached is the description from the ebay auction i havent looked into seeing if it can read abs systems on the suby, and i am pretty sure it cannot read srs system without the dedicated cartridge for that. i really hope this helps at least a little bit.

cheers.

It's crazy how many ppl list them on CL in my area for hundreds of dollars. It's almost useless nowadays unless you work on old stuff.

Sorry for bring the old thread back. Just bought the "red brick" with domestic primary and troubleshooting cartridges; plan to use it for my two Japanese cars from the late 90's. What do you guys recommend?

(1) Generic ODB-II cartridge or Asian import primary/troubleshooting cartridges?
(2) Will the Asian troubleshooting cartridge work with the Asian import primary? The troubleshooting cartridge alone seems to be a lot cheaper on eBay.

Don't discount the number of people who work on old stuff. I buy and sell a lot of used tools and am constantly surprised by folks who buy things that others scoff at being obsolete. Just sold a couple of old paint guns that were in great shape (guy is painting tractors and equipment), sell a lot of SAE tools, could sell every Whitworth tool I could get if I could find any, and even the lowly Bricks will sell though not for as much as some people ask.

But I did meet a guy who sells Bricks to third world countries and will get $800 plus for them, but he has the connections.

At $40, the OP did great is he has some used for it.

Ive got a couple of them that I collectively spend $150 on. Considering someone spent big money on these thangs back in the day its a good deal if you run older stuff (which I do) Ive put a ton of adds on clist to get newer cartridges but never get any responses. So to you I say good luck.

$40 is a "You ****" price if it came with a complete complement of keys, cartridges and cables, and is as up to date as it can be. Just search completed listings on eBay; generally these set ups go for around $200, but with the latest software, over $300 is possible. I got $250 for the last one I sold, and it had all the accessories, but was not quite up to the close out date.

I have since purchased the programmable cartridges updated through 06-07. Im into the whole setup for less than 400. Originally it had 99 domestic cartridges 12 keys,obd2 cable and 5 obd1 adapters. I have everything I need as I dont do european or anything that new. If I were going to spend anymore I would hold out for a solus

Hello,
I don't work at a shop anymore but was thinking about getting a brick for home use... As of now I have a basic scan tool and it doesn't really do a whole lot... And at times I don't feel like I can trust it... I was looking at other scan tools like the OTC but thought for around the same price as $200 or so I could just get the Snap On brick... All my vehicles are 1999 or older but would like to be able to go up to 06 or so for other peoples cars... My point here is to get some advice on what others think about this and also to know how well these things hold up over time... I wouldn't want to spend $200 on something and if it breaks I'm out of luck... I look at it like the brick is the super scan tool for the diy/home mechanic... Thanks.

I have one for home use with cartridges up to 2001 and it works great. They are real easy to use and seem bulletproof. If you have only used a cheap code reader you will be very impressed with the MT2500. Get a hold of your local Snap-on dealers. They often take these in on trade for newer scanners. I got mine for $100 for my Snap-on dealer.
