lifetime warranty for so many things has fine print that really makes you question if its worth paying 2x the price.

Craftsman is probably the best , because whoever bought the Craftsman name probably were not ordered to warranty the old tools forever , so anything you get is a plus.

Does the SO tool truck owner get charged if he exchanges broken tools?
Not directly, unless he warranties something he shouldn't have. But he does (usually) have to put it in a box and ship it back to Snap On for "evaluation". They then give him a credit on his account for the value of the item.

I've been making warranty claims over the past few months with SO. I think maybe because the # on the tool is very old and they don't make that version any longer, they just send me the new version and tell me not to worry about sending the old ones in. However, they WILL require a return on things like ratchets. They sent me the repair kit and my ratchet is like brand new again.

Gotta wonder if this alledged policy change is being applied to customers or just people they've never heard of? Because if they try pulling that **** with tools I bought off the truck 30 years ago I'll jump on the resulting class action lawsuit.
I don't have a lot of snappy but what I do have I gave the truck guy cash and he gave me tools, I never received a receipt.

To be clear, I don't think any manufacturer should warranty an old rusty tool with pealing chrome, or abused tools. What my post and the one above it was saying is that the warranty could stay with the tool. If replacements are built into the cost, what does it matter who collects? Their past (lack) of enforcement in my mind was putting their warranty on their tools in line with other options.
Ever have a piece of chipped chrome cut you or fly into your face or lodge onto your hand? If not....I'll say it really *****. :-(

My earliest Snap On purchases (mid 1990s) came with receipts hand written on those little three part "Guest Check" type papers. Long gone.

I recently asked my dealer for a printout of everything I've ever bought from him. It was...eye opening. Some day, one of us will move, retire, or move on in some other way, so I wanted a record of it all. I think I've only ever warrantied two tools...a 90* pick and a ratcheting screwdriver that locked up after 25 years of use.

Well dang!
I just bought a SO hand carry toolbox from the late 1930's for $15 and the bottom was rusted out from sitting on a dirt carport floor that got flooded occasionally....
You mean they are not going to give me a new one!
Shame on them!!!!!!!!!

On another note, The 1938 GE switchgear in the hydro powerplant where I worked had a long hand crank extension with a 1 inch tool truck socket on the end to lower the breaker housing for maintenance. The socket cracked one day. I just went out and bought a new socket for it. One of the work crew took the socket and went to the tool truck when it was in town and was handed a new one, no questions asked. We put it back on the original extension since it was certainly a better socket than the one I bought.

:)

I hope this isn't a repeat answer... so I just got off the phone with SnapOn and gave them the #s of 2 sockets. She needed to confirm my contact info(from prev warr. claims) and expect the new sockets in 7 days. She didn't ask for proof or a receipt. image.jpgI haven't had any issues yet with them and these sockets are kind of old. My father-in-law gave me a couple buckets of tools from his days as a mechanic. Some are in bad shape. Assorted brands and thankfully 99% USA made.

Nothing personal but I don't think this a warranty issue. You just said they came out of a bucket of old sockets which means they were bouncing around with other sockets with the metal rubbing on each other, moisture etc. I don't see why Snap-On or any other company should warranty items like this.
