I don't know if this topic has been brought up yet but I was on the SO truck yesterday and saw that Snap On is upgrading all their pry bars (12, 18, 24 inc) to the new larger crown handle design. My dealer told me they handle strikes in the cold better now. This is good as the only times I broke one was hitting on it in the cold, on 3 occasions. (2x 18in and 1 x24 inch)ordered a new 42inch Red.

They changed the design a few months ago. I don't like them on the smaller bars, but they seem to protect your hand better. I have the old style in both striking and non striking handles, I also have the larger bars in the new crown style handle.

Here are some linked photos from a Ebay sale that show the handles.

The smaller ones feel awkward in my hand, plus the handle is larger, so you may find obstruction issues. I will be buying a set just to complete my collection, then I can take some side by side pictures of them.

I'll take the hard handle design anyday, they may be striking but you don't always whack them when you are using them. I want them to feel good in my hand also

I hate the new style handle. May as well be a big *** purple ***** mounted on a prybar. The relatively smooth round handle ***** for twisting while prying and I personally think they're ugly as hell. As soon as I got my hands on one I handed it right back and promptly bought the last set of regular hard handles my dealer had on the truck just to have a backup set.

I suppose it's better than if they decided to use a big version of those terrible Instink screwdriver handles on the prybars......

I hate them too. I bought another set of the old style in orange just to have stashed away when I need them.

It's pretty bad when the new product spurs a spike in sales.......of the old product.

I know people will try to like them but from a long time tool users standpoint they seem poorly thought out to me. It's almost as if they felt like they had to make a change just for the sake of making a change and not really to improve the product.

I'm having my dealer build me an old set before they are all gone. Some Sets have gone through the roof.

On the big bars they are nicer, on the small bars, not so much. I think the old style handle would look goofy on my 54" and 48", it actually looks goofy on the 42". On the 36" and smaller bars the old handles rock.

I guess I can see what you mean. They don't seem quite so cartoonish on the huge bars.

This has probably been mentioned, but they changed them because the larger pry bars required the old handles to be hollowed out way too much, making them extremely weak. They would crack in the cold without ever being used.

I exchanged my 42" bar three times before the driver gave me truck credit for a crown handled 36" bar. The first one cracked while prying quite hard, and the next two cracked from sitting over night in the freezing cold.

The crown handles are an existing product, so they didn't have to R&D new handles, just use the bigger ones that they already produce. I do think they're quite cumbersome in the 8" and 12" sizes.

The good news is, a set of Mayhew Dominator prybars can be purchased from Princess Auto for $80.

The logical thing would've been to just make the large prybar handles larger. Bigger bar, bigger handle, same as they do for ratchets and screwdrivers.

But we all know about the use of logic and common sense..

I don't think logic drives much these days. I have an extra set of the small ones and I hope to keep them forever. I may buy a new set, but the two little ones are definitely going up for sale. I have this plan to have all sizes and shapes of pry bars that snap on offers. Not sure if I have a problem, but I think so.

Very little it seems. A design is popular? Better change it.

Oh, i think so too.

I don't think my pry bar obsession is as bad as my hammer obsession, at least I don't have one of each in two colors.
