i have a set of the snap on instinct soft handle screwdrivers in red & black, ive seen that you can still get the old classic red handle screwdriver sets and im not sure whether or not to swap my instinct set for the classic set.

Which handle is best what do people prefer, the new instinct soft grip i feel will wear easy and get dirty and stay dirty whereas the old classis handle screwdrivers seem to be hardwearing and tough.

?????

I realise you're trawling for opinions, but really it's not what we prefer - it's what YOU prefer. You're the one that's gotta use them.

The hard handles are easier to clean for sure, and if chipped you can sand the surface to "erase" the chip. If you take a chunk out the rubber on the grip of the instincts, then that's that.

Me personally, much as I love the look (and feel, to an extent) of the orange classic hard handle, I'd say I prefer the softgrip handles the best - the ones that came before the instinct handles.

I like them both. I feel I can get more torque with the instincts though. I use them, so I'm not to concerned with scratching the handles.

what is the plasic like on the old classic hard handle, ive felt the instinct hard handle and in my opinion it feels cheap and really light, is the classic the same or is it more of a solid and heavy plastic

You are correct, the Instinct hard handles do feel cheap and light. The classics are much better quality.

Personally i prefer classic hard handles, it's easier to produce more torque with instincts but i don't find them comfortable. Just my opinion.

I'm not sure how the quality = weight thing started. Perhaps back in the day when everything was made from thicker steel? I won't argue that they don't "feel" cheap, but perhaps it's to your benefit. IMO, I like to use lighter handles when I'm working on something with screwdrivers for a few hours. That being said, I do like how the older style hard handles feel over the new ones. Overall though, I like the more round handles than the older hard handles.. think Witte or husky, even. Easier to spin, for me.

I prefer the Instinct vs the old hard handle. I bought some hard handle ones based off the love of them on this site. I used a co workers Instinct one day and they feel better in my hand. Its just what works for you best.

Own both ... I prefer the instinct handle for screwdrivers but prefer the old hard handles for ratchets over the current soft grips, yeah I'm weird like that.

It depends what you do. If you work in a clean environment the soft handles are probably fine, but for most folks, and certainly myself they are not good.

They pick up oil and grease which is hard to wipe off because of the texture, then you get grit stuck on, which makes them awful to use, then the soft coating gets damaged! The hard handle Instincts are better, but neither are as good as the older pattern!

If you doubt me, look at the tools used in a professional garage or by an aviation mechanic. Those older hard handles just develop a slight polish and go on forever, but where you find the (obviously newer) soft handles they vary between rough and junk!

I have both the old 1990's vintage hard handles and the new instinct soft. I prefer the soft....but that is me. What do YOU like?

What feels comfortable to one person doesn't mean everyone will like it. Buy and use what YOU like, not me, your neighbor, or the lunatic down the road from you likes.

Here's my analysis, see if you guys agree.

The instincts are larger, the corners are more aggressive, the soft grip much grippier, requiring less hand strength. They are easier to grip and twist.

The hard **** allows them to be spun pretty easily, but the old style hard handles are better for this i.e. good for lots of low torque clean screws.

I think the shape of either is superior to all others e.g. Wiha uses 19th c handle shapes originally lathe turned. I like them, but they are no match for instincts. Note that Williams makes hard handled screwdrivers using Snap On old HH shape.

The soft grip models are prone to damage, the rubber can be torn or worn to shreds. They are also more difficult to clean. That said, they are easily to grip with oily hands than hard handles. And note that they can be effectively cleaned with non-petrol detergents like simple green or dish soap.

I have hard handles from the early 90s. They have almost no wear after many years of hard use. They are easily cleaned and scratches can sanded out. I would recommend them for industrial, institutional users i.e. people who won't maintain them, replace worn tools etc. they are professional grade industrial strength models.

Last, the new ACR Phillips heads are nice. My old HH don't have this feature.

For individuals, especially home users, I recommend instincts.suggest buying sets or individual in different colors to speed up selection.

Here we go again, another person who cannot decide for themselves what kind of screwdriver to use, IMO just buy a set of every single screwdriver brand suggested here and on countless other threads, and get out there and make money with them

The instincts are not cheaper junk. The plastic is softer and designed for grip. Yeah they will get diet and won't clean up as easily. Will they last as long? That depends on how you use them, as hammers or screwdrivers.

Dude they are screwdrivers. This isn't life or death. Flip a coin if you're that indecisive.
