Well finally going to take the big step and get a bigger tool box. My choices r,
A) the 3 bay macsimizer or
B) the 3 bay master series that is 29" deep

Ask a rep about custom drawer set up for a krl it will suit u better in the long run smaller drawers are not always the best

I don't have a Mac dealer so I cannot say which is better but u will always get top dollar for snap on boxes over the other big brands whenever u decide to upgrade again

My boss has a macsimizer, I have a krl. He is 3 shades of jealous. His box is super nice, but relying on detents to keep a drawer closed is crazy. His drawers open sometimes when he is pushing it around the hanger and have been the cause of a touch up paint job on a wing tip.

Both are nice, but I would not trade my krl for his macsimizer.

Edit ps
When he needed to add a side box he put a krl sidebox on his macsimizer :D lol that may say everything that needed to be said.

I got a 29" deep SO KRL and its bulky for sure. Got it for $1800 secondhand-new.

See if you can wangle a deal for a Van stock unit or go second hand.

The Mac boxes are decent as well. Just think about it. Those KRL's are real expensive.

It all comes down to the Lock 'n Roll drawers and drawer arrangement. The MAC has adjustable detents I believe. The Snap-on has Lock 'n Roll latches. Other than that, the differences start to get trivial. Four bolts for the side handle on the MAC. Two bolts for the Snap-on.

Mac gets my vote hands down-"Macsimizer series box". The snappy boxes just don't handle heavy drawers as well.
Done!

I have a feeling you would get a better price on a snap on box. But shop around the macsimizer is a nice box too. But like others mentioned the lock and roll is a big deal, I don't like the Mac and Matco detents. Snap on is here with support for the long haul very mixed on Mac

Agreed...All things being equal, I feel the Macsimizer is more box then a KRL/EPIQ.
I know theres alot of grief about the MAC Detents, but IMHO its a lack of understanding of how they work I believe. If you have a decent MAC Guy, he should be able to adjust them and show you how to adjust them. In a perfect world, the beauty of the adjustable detents is you can adjust your Heavy Drawers to have stiff detents and your very light drawers to be very light detent, so all drawers open with "equal force". Properly setup, its AWESOME.
The KRL/Lock n Roll or Epiq Latch are just a very simple/idiot proof solution. by no means do I feel they are the best.

And yes, all this comes from a KRL Owner...If my MAC Guy could swap my 722 for an 1860, I'd trade with zero thought.

I have neither. But the Mac computer hooks ups and power ports look pretty nice to me. That's a pretty sweet set up

I have a Matco. had my original matco since 88, still have it actually in my garage at home. I love the new one, of course getting an $17000 box 3 months used for $5200 didn't hurt either. My boss has a SO, really nice box as well.

I own a KRL and a Macsimizer. IMO it depends on your usage and preference. Like Dave stated, the detents on the Mac are adjustable so you can make it whatever you want and i feel the Mac is "beefier". Also if you think you may sell/trade down the road, the KRL will likely have higher resale and be easier to sell. Both have different advantages.

Both are good boxes and you really can't go wrong. If one of your dealers is better than the other, or one offering a smoking price, nicer color etc.. that's how I would choose.

Thanks guys and I know everyone has said this before but I'm hoping this will be the last box I will ever buy. Also in the shop I'm in right now we don't have the room to roll our boxes around.

Pick out which boxes you are interested in.

Ask for a price breakdown, inform each dealer that you will be comparing price, drawer configurations, etc...

Assess your options and make the decision based on what is most important to yourself.

Things like trade in value, wait time, expand-ability (side cabs, risers, topchests), color, and price would be the things I would consider most.

Spending big money on a box is a personal decision. Do not let someone dissuade you from making the choice you are comfortable with. Both boxes you are considering should give you a long service life and give you plenty of bragging rights. I do not think you will be unhappy choosing either.

Good luck. Please give us pictures of your new box when you make the choice.

At my work, most of the popular offerings are represented. I used to have a SO heritage and now have a SO KRSC and CM 26" which take care of my needs well. Having had the opportunity to see both boxes, I would not shy away from either. Thing is my work only has a SO guy so that would probably make my decision for me.

Buy the one you like and get the better deal on. As much as I like the big Mac, I give the edge to SO for the customer support in the long run.

First off buy a used box.

Secondly, if you want the best get a KRL. Otherwise just get a matco 4s used on craigs they are the cheapest to find and are very rugged, more so than any mac box IMO. I am an AP.

Ive never dealt with a mac box box honestly, but i can say that krl's are amazing. However, if i were going to dish out money on a top of the line box, id go matco 6s all day. just seem the sturdiest to me

No they don't, at all. Nice, but not comparable in any way other than size and the fact they are tool boxes.

Do you have one? Mine sets not to far from a Mac 3 bay and It's hard to find something better on the Mac. Our Matco guy even has some of the boxes info printed out that he carries on his truck. And for the price, you can buys a lot more tools.

Had a montezuma and now a krl. There is no comparison. Dollar for dollar I'm much happier with the krl. I'd be happier with my bosses macsimizer over the zuma as well. Nice boxes but they are not on the same playing field. Everything from steel gauge, slide quality, drawer layout, casters, to overall finish the krl's and the macsimizers are much much better boxes.

I work in a hangar where I'm shoving my box around multiple times a day, the montezuma would not hold up. So maybe I have different criteria than a shop that you are able to park in one spot. They have nice boxes not knocking them, but if your shopping for a macsimizer or krl you are probably not going to be happy with the cheaper offerings out there.

I would play both dealers against one another. In other words you're going to spend $xxxx what is the best deal you can do. Tool boxes have a lot of wiggle room on price especially if you are paying cash. Let us know how you do.

I'm just waiting on the quote for the snap on tool box, dealer wants to make sure he can get me every discount possible. The mac tools guy had a set price and he said there was no wiggle room and really didn't want to take my old box in on trade in, kinda turned me off of getting a mac tool box.
