In one of the SK threads There was a discussion about snap on was the best USA Ratchet. I like them and will continue to buy from them but seems that they are having QC issues to. One of those members wanted me to post a picture of the plastic selector switch on one of my replacement ratchets. Looks like it was made this way for a few years. But here are the pics of some of my recent snap on purchases that are kind of a whoops. Some of these I have posted before.

The only one that I will replace is the wire stripper. The handles don’t lock and sometimes I keep my mm next to it and I don’t want to cut the leads on the mm.

I have a few more but like I said the pics have already been posted in a previous thread. Again not bashing snap on so don’t get your ******* in a twist. This is just what I received from the truck or from them directly. It’s my luck like my wife would say.

Which one are you complaining has the plastic selector? The FHNF100? They've been like that for years and I actually prefer it as it doesn't get banged up and discolored as much as the aluminum ones on the THNF (1/4") series.

I also routinely get screw drivers and such that has dirty handles.

For what I do it’s not a big deal my old one was metal they replaced it with this one. Apparently somebody did not believe me that it was plastic they wanted a picture of it instead of just googling it. As stated in the opening post I know they have been making it out of plastic for a while now. The only reason why somebody would maybe like the old one is if it was at a high heat area but again I don’t have that problem.

Q8J6U1.gif You (A) stated it as part of a sign of SO somehow
O going downhill and (B) didn't give any model/context/etc. Given the statement below in that thread, your credibility is/was...questionable.

As for someone "just googling it" you didn't offer any information to start with other than "snap on" and "plastic". FWIW, the product page doesn't mention anything about plastic.

You say in this thread:
Again not bashing snap on so don’t get your ******* in a twist.
But you say in the SK thread:
I love Ruffling feathers of snap on diehards.
Care to try to harmonize those statements?

FWIW - I'm not a SO diehard. As a guy who runs both a SO and Icon 1/4" swivel, I don't find a noticeable difference other than the SO is a bit shorter and more compact.

There QC is not as good as it used to be. Plastic parts instead of metal.
Just saying SK is NOT the only one having issues. To I have to get my crayons out and draw you a picture. Take it easy Francis.

And as far as the model number like I know all the model numbers of the tools at work when I’m at home. I use them I don’t collect them. And as far as saying it in the SK thread the post before mine about Snap On being the best I love how someone Always talks about a different brand but then somebody always has to throw in just buy snap on it’s the best. Gets old after a while and I like making fun of it.

Changing materials isn't a QC issue - it's a design change. QC stands for "Quality Control" which is the effort to make sure things don't go out with defects. Shipping a plastic selector that is as-designed/intended doesn't count.

As to whether it's lower quality - that's really measured by fallout over time. I don't love the idea that it is plastic, but I doubt it was purely a cost-saving move at the expense of quality on the part of SO - sure to raise a ruckus. I'd guess if you could talk to the product manager, he could explain exactly why it's not metal.

FWIW - I just looked at my SO 1/4" roto-head and my Icon 1/4" and 3/8" roto-heads and the selector plate is metal on all three.

And as far as the model number like I know all the model numbers of the tools at work when I’m at home. I use them I don’t collect them.
Saying "my SO 3/8" roto-head" would have been sufficient. k0WNDf.gif

So you're just a troll. Got it.

Plastic instead of metal is a cost saving thing. But Yet they don’t pass that to the consumer Again not just an Snap On thing. That can be About a lot of manufacturing and construction. I should’ve been more clear when I wrote that. Did not mean it to be a qc thing just Kind of referring back to my candid statement about going downhill. It’s not necessarily a bad thing and It can help them to be more competitive or Help their profit.

Plastic instead of metal is a cost saving thing.
It seems like a glaringly obvious place to save what is likely to be a very small amount of cost and set themselves up for a lot of online blowback.

You might be right, but it seems like a very simplistic explanation.

If I recall correctly the red part of the selector is plastic on the Ko-ken swivels.

If you bought the screwdriver loose off the truck, the stain is most likely from one of your esteemed colleagues handling it with grubby hands and putting it back.

All companies have some quality control errors but some of these aren't really examples. Things on the truck are handled and sometimes even demoed so if you want untouched you'd need to buy a boxed and plastic wrapped set.

Update: I had read that the Nepros ratchets switched materials (examples shown in photos) but it's been brought to my attention that the reviewers may be mistaken. Sorry!

Nothing is wrong with that ratchet it was a replacement I like it. I just posted a picture of it because someone wanted a pic of it. The other pics are problems with some recent things I got from them not all of them that bad. The one that is the worst is the wire striper will not lock. I have had them for a few months just have not replaced them. Everything functions like it should with all of the tools they just got overlooked by QC.

Yes that is as far as it will go. If I grind down the hook part it will probably work.

I bought a pair of the Big 49ACF slip jaws from them and the jaws didn't match at the tip. very surprised. Our rep sent a new set, but the handles were bent such that they touched when closed. No finger room. I love the high-leverage and needle nose I got
