I just received these in a pkg of tools i purchased. I tried searching the internet and although Snap On made a pliers with this number they sure don't look the same. What were these designed for? Anyone need them?

I would say somebody modified old pliers they were not using anymore. It's hard to tell, but it kind of looks like the tips were silver soldered on later.

Brake Key Pliers Number 70A

Brake Key Pliers Number 70A were introduced in 1941. 7 inches long. These are closer to the modern snap ring pliers. Serrated edges on the pins to prevent slipping.

Number 70 A 1941 – 1970
Brake Key Pliers Number 70B were introduced in 1950. 7 inches long. Serrated edges are on straight pins 90 degrees off the 70A to gain better access.
Number 70 B 1950 - 1970

These have not been modified After the 70-A USA there is an I (looks more like an H) Maybe it's an identifier.

I re-read the thread and it hit me - YOU'RE CANADIAN!!!! So am I!

I bet they are special for Snapon CANADA. Snapon Canada ordered them made for something that was in Canada and not the US. GM or Ford or someone made something for the Canadian Market that required a special tool.

That's why there is a shortage of information on the pliers.

It is. It identified the tool as made in 1961.

I'm with the people saying this was modified. I've got pairs of 70-A and 70-B pliers, and the jaws are nothing like this.

I talked to a lady at Snap On this afternoon. She asked for pictures which i have sent to her. Maybe next week we will know something more from her. I'm still thinking someone on GJ is going to say " i have that exact pliers and it is used for fixing xyz on an abc". Rancherbill my money's on your theory. I'm thinking a Canadian military application.

The tips are not original to that plier. They appear to me to be for some sort of cable application. Most likely home made and finding the exact purpose they were made for is going to be like finding a Sasquatch riding a unicorn. Ain't gonna happen. All we can do is speculate. One of us is probably right but who knows.

Parking brake cable spring pliers. Throttle cable spring pliers. T/V spring pliers. Anything where you need to compress a small-ish spring to service a cable of some sort. Very handy and useful indeed. One of those tools you'll use once a year, but it'll save your bacon when you need it.

Found a 70A Snap on pliers in my tool box. Probably were my dads. Going to see if they will work to remove a VW driveshaft circlip. I will also clean them up.
