Does that account for inflation? A lot of people will see an ad for stuff in the old days and go "man I wish prices were cheap like back then" when if you adjust for inflation, then the price today for the same item really hasn't risen much at all (or it has even decreased)
Price of 8 piece screwdriver set in January of 1996 was $96.05 in 2015 dollars that's $143.00. A set of the same screwdrivers with newer handles is $157.00. So that's only a 10% rise in a spand of almost 20 years. not that bad if you ask me.
It actually just went up again, worst part is in the middle of an order!
I wouldn't bet on that because there are other brands such as Lista and Rousseau are penetrating that same market for much less than SO boxes.I think about this when I consider buying a second hand KRL toolbox. I suspect those things never sell at list. The 10 year old models floating around today are probably selling for more than they were purchased for. Neglecting inflation, I think that's a cheap tool box. Buy it for $2000, sell it on Craigslist 15 years later for $2000.

Adjusted for Inflation using this calculator:http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl
F720 3/8 Standard Ratchet: $35.25 = $69.94 in 2015
OEXM160 16mm Combination Wrench: $20.40 = $40.48
FSM131 3/8 Chrome 13mm socket: $5.10 = $10.12
SDDP42 #2 hard-handle Phillips, 4" shank: $9.65 = $19.15
BF618 Body hammer: $38.00 = $75.40
OK, now let's compare those inflation-adjusted prices to actual 2015 SO prices...
F80 Ratchet: $99.95
OEXM160B: $37.25
FSM131: $14.90
SHDP42IRR: $22.90
BF618B: $73.25

What's the point here again? Has everyone's wages only increased with inflation? I make 4x what I made (in the same job for the same company) in 1991. Thats double the increase in inflation (And I'm not bragging about that)
Maybe SO price increases are related to SO employee wage increases. Good US jobs. Automation will have allowed the price of some tools to increase less than those requiring more touch labor? Given my wage increases, Snap On tools are now less expensive for me to purchase. A point I have made many times here. My new set of hammers cost less than a family dinner to Chille's.
I think America has become drunk on cheap chinese imports. We pay less for socks and underwear today, than we did 10 years ago. But the low priced goods at HF and Walmart come with a hidden cost. Where will our children work? What about their children?
BTW, the Europeans are better at this than we are.

I used to think the same way that HF was just good enough until I own couple Lista boxes. It's not mainly about thickness of metal or its high capacity, it's more about the ability to ORGANIZE your tools and material, and that's something that SO box or HF struggle to do.I would...
I cant comment about Rosseau..but in 10 years ??? if you'll be able to get parts to service a 10 year old Lista. History has proven that to be true today. A 10 year old Lista is on par with a HF toolbox...no parts.
I don't care if its made with 3/8" Plate, if you cant get wear items like slides, pulls, and other NECESSARY items, even the best branded box is just scrap metal. At least a 10 year old Snappy is still serviceable.

I think it's one of those thing where you have to experience it first hand.
Funny thing is Scoot, I was actually wrenching for a living in 1988, and back then the thought of paying those kind of prices for a box would probably have given me a heart attack. Nowadays, those prices seem like a pretty good dealZrexxer , Thanks for the tool box prices![]()
