The F80 is a new dual 80 design with 2 pawls and 80 teeth, the f830 is a older ratchet with 1 pawl and 30 teeth.

Link to the auction I don't think I have seen a F80 go that cheap yet?

It is really a dual 80, or just an older part number that is pointed over to the current model on snap on's page?

ok so i was absolutly wrong,i thought i had read that the 830 was dual 80 so i assumed it was the same thing,i have mistakenly called an 830 an 80,thinking they were basicly the same thing, thanks for clearing that up,and now i understand why i won for so cheap.

About ten to twenty years I think.

The 9xx series came after the 8xx. The Dual 80's are just a few years old.

The F830 is still an ultra high quality ratchet; light years ahead of its time. The head on the F830 is smaller, maybe not thinner, but smaller overall than the F80 - giving it a more balanced, symmetrical look. I have two F830's and I treasure them with all my heart.

I like the 830's too. Really a lot better then my F80's.

Just personal preference.

I was just letting him know that the 8xx series is an older style in design and age.

I have an F730A that was the same deal. It was advertised as a Dual 80 on Ebay, and my quick search of the part number on S.O. site said dual 80 so I bought. It wasn't till after I paid that I saw the threads here about how the S.O. site forwards you to the equivalent Dual 80 page when you search on an old ratchet. I was pissed for a day, but was over it by the time the F730A arrived. Now I am enjoying my F730A for what it is... An older, quality, S.O. ratchet that is worth the $25 I spent on it.

Made the EXACT same mistake! Now I have an f830 AND an f80.....since I wasn't pleased that the first ratchet was not a Dual 80 :)

Now if you look at the F830 it has the same foot print on the face it is just more rounded.
My observation is the exact opposite of yours....
Left to right, F830 - F936 - F80.
Proof is in the putting!! Merkava I have used all of them and the head thickness is what causes the most grief.

If ratchet head thickness is a real issue, try looking at GearWrench. For me, the F80 is plenty thin. I use those ratchets now almost exclusively.

If I were to say SO's line has anything that is truly worth the money they ask for their tools, the closest would be their ratchets, if not right on the spot for what they ask.

Hey All,
I'm glad this thread has popped up, let me explain. Last night the Snap On tool truck came to work, I work the night shift just so you all know. Well I sprang for a new ratchet. I got the SL80, I didn't think there would be that much difference between that and my usual c'man, husky or sk. But damm am I in love with that ratchet! Wow I am planning or swapping out all of my existing ratchets now. Time to really start looking at ebay and craiglist.

Join the club; it seems we would all like to have dual 80s for everything now.. :) This is one of the classic curses of getting "just one Snapon tool"... you can't just seem to get "only one"... there will be more to follow! :)

I think the Snap On guy saw that look in my face when I first felt it, that and the cash machine going off in his head as I was standing the fondling my new ratchet! And you are right there really isn't "just one Snap on tool"
